I would really like to buy a bottle of scotch, have it gift wrapped and delivered to an address in Montreal for a friend's birthday. I have read that SAQ does home delivery, but I dont think they do gift wrapping and the Scotch selection is not great. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting this done?

I was gonna recommend Drizly but it looks like it's not available in Montreal yet. The Drizly app is a game changer, a pandemic essential!

From what I know "Buy whatever tempts you directly on SAQ.COM and in the SAQ mobile application, it's easy and secure. And in-store delivery is free from $ 75 of purchases! ... And if you prefer, your purchases can be delivered to your home or office for a flat rate of $ 12 per order. "

I'm wondering if it is legit in QC. I'm asking because licensed bars are not allowed to deliver alcool. Restaurant are allowed only with meal. All this to be sure you will not get a fraudulent product instead of what you pay for.

Like It Hot, I am not sure I follow your reasoning. When you go to a Montreal bar and order a drink, I am not aware of any requirement that the bartender show you the bottles or labels of the liquor from which you were served any straight or mixed drinks. On that note, I remember around 15 years ago, I went to a sports bar on St. Laurent called "Champs." The bartender made me a fruity cocktail drink, I think a Seabreeze or something like that. I was sitting with a friend at a table and not at the bar. Someone served me the drink and I detected no liquor in it. It tasted like 100% pure juice. I complained. The bartender then called the manager and I had an argument with the manager after which I asked for my bill, paid it and left with my friend.

How is delivery any different? You basically trust that you are getting what you ordered. What is stopping the bartender from going into the restroom with your drink, sticking his dick in it and squirting a shot of urine into the drink you have ordered and then putting in a few ice cubes? There is nothing at all that will stop that from happening. Same thing can happen when you order pizza.

Although it's not in Montreal, Drizly does deliver in Alberta. Maybe one day they will also deliver in Montreal:

FYI. I used to live with a bartender, she told me to never order a " fruity " drink as there is very little alcohol. Remember hearing people brag they can handle alcohol well because they drank 12 pink flamingos or whatever, they probably consumed 6 oz of alcohol.

There are many places in Alberta that offer that, they will even stop on the way and grab smokes for you for an extra fee.

It depends on the bar. Some use a little and some use a generous amount. Either way I can taste when there is no liquor as opposed to little liquor. I am not exactly a newbie to ordering cocktails and I have ordered them all over the world. What I was served at Champs was fruit juice and I was charged for the cost of a cocktail. It's the only time in my adult life when I have complained about the lack of liquor in my drink at any bar. If I order a cocktail and it tastes light on alcohol, I compensate by ordering shots. And I don't complain because I know it happens that some bars skimp on the liquor.

I noticed that some bars in Montreal have two prices for cocktails. They charge one price for a cocktail with one shot and a higher price for two shots. I think Deville Dinerbar and The Keg both do this. The Keg calls it "Keg size", or something like that. But when you get the one shot drink you can taste the alcohol. My taste buds did not check out yet- I have not had Covid and I know when a drink has liquor in it. And when it doesn't. Champs flat made me a juice drink. They saw an American tourist in town for the Jazz Festival and decided they would take me for a ride and I wasn't having any of that bull shit. I don't allow myself to be used by locals anywhere.

You know there are dishonest people everywhere and of course honest ones too. In a bar or a restaurant, alcool have a special sticker attesting its coming from legit retail. in QC all alcool go through SAQ (Société des Alcohols du Québec). Regularly, bar are checked to be sure 1- the bottles have the original sticker and 2- those bottles are not refilled with fraudulent alcool. I'm not arguing that this control can not be done for a delivery service. For drinks, if you ask a rhum and coke, the rhum is usually served in its own glass so you can taste it before and you add it yourself to the soda. Of course for a cocktail it is different, specially when different liquors are mixed. That's a reason it's better to sit at the bar and see the bartender doing your drink. Sorry you got a bad experience in Montreal but I'm quite sure you got a lot more good ones! Cheers!

Actually I had many good ones and I do like that certain Montreal bars, like those at Devile Dinerbar and The Keg, offer customers the choice "extra shot" cocktails. I have ordered those "manly cocktails" at those bars and do not mind paying the upcharge if I can taste and feel the liquor at work. Although I am sure they exist somewhere,in the USA I have not typically seen that choice available in CT.

As for watching bartenders do their pours, when I had the bad experience at Champs I was sitting at a table with a friend in an empty bar and did not see the bartender do the pour because I was talking to my friend. If you go to the Keg downtown, which is where I have done more drinking than anywhere else in Montreal, you are very close to the bartenders and can observe their pours. It would be very hard to pull off a cheat there.

Guys - I need to have a bottle of hard liquor gift wrapped and delivered to a friend in Montreal sometime in the next few weeks for a birthday. I appreciate all of this discussion, but Alberta doesnt do me any good. Nor does the possibility that a service may come to Montreal months from now. Is SAQ my only option? Do they provide gift wrapping? it doesnt sound like they do.

Read post #5, perhaps? Tell them extra to wrap it.

There are three levels of store, SAQ stores have an general selection to cater to the general public. The Express store are usually on smaller streets and have a basic selection. The SAQ Sélection store are much bigger and have a wide selection and you can order rare wines and scotches to be delivered to the store for pick up, these stores are usually in shopping centers and bigger main streets.

Perhaps some fine MERB member can do a favor? I am not in the province or I would have assisted.

SAQ is a solid option, but you're right; their selection can be a bit limited. If you're up for it, you could check out some local liquor stores in Montreal, as some of them might offer delivery services and might even be open to gift wrapping if you ask nicely.
Personally, I've been experimenting with cocktails lately. Indeed, I've been more into mocktails. BTW, check out this website I stumbled upon: https://goodmocktail.com/recipe. They've got some killer mocktail recipes that could add a unique touch to your friend's birthday celebration.
