A cell phone is definitely a necessity, especially for emergencies (car breakdown for one). However, you only need the cheapest pre-paid phone for this purpose. An iPhone or other internet-capable phone as a necessity? Maybe. I can't think of one right now, but there MIGHT be a future need...

I think it's safe to assume that Blu-Ray is the standard now. The competing format, HD-DVD, was pretty much abandoned in early 2008. Analogous to Betamax.
