Steak was right actually. By the way old_beginner, in the Eastern townships we talk about canoë and pagaie. Also the term my kids leaned when they were in camp.

pagaie is pronounced with a hard G like gang and 'aie. is pronounced like est (be) like in 'il est. Or as in guêpe.
