Readers' Digest Australian edition has just published it's 2013 poll on the professions that are seen as most dependable, honest, reliable and trustworthy -
Australia's Most Trusted Professions 2013

Here is the list:

1. Firefighters
1. Paramedics
3. Rescue volunteers
4. Nurses
5. Pilots
6. Doctors
7. Pharmacists
8. Veterinarians
9. Air traffic controllers
10. Farmers

11. Scientists
12. Armed Forces personnel
13. Police
14. Dentists
15. Teachers
16. Childcare workers
17. Flight attendants
18. Bus/Train/Tram drivers
19. Locksmiths
20. Hairdressers
21. Postal workers
22. Waiters
23. Computer technicians
24. Security guards
25. Cleaners

27. Alternative health practitioners
28. Plumbers
29. Mechanics
30. Accountants

44. Talkback radio hosts
45. Real estate agents
46. Sex workers
47. Call centre staff
48. Insurance salespeople
49. Politicians
50. Door-to-door salespeople

It would be interesting to see how the results of such a poll would differ in Quebec. Those professions rated in the top 10 are probably universally respected. However, I suspect that the following professions would rate much lower here:

  • Police
  • Bus drivers
  • Builders
  • Mechanics
Sex workers are rated relatively low, undoubtedly because of society's prejudice against sex workers in general, although most people responding to the poll have probably never met a sex worker in their life.

It would also be interesting to see where hobbyists would rate sex workers.

Look behind you.
#8 way too high, my dad dropped $3700.00 to a vet to try and keep his 17 year old dog alive.
#29 way too high. No need to comment
#36 too high. I have 2 brokers who do not know about each other, caught a few probable bad investments.
#39 should not even be on the chart, anyone gone through a divorce.
#45 should not be on the chart, I will always try and sell my own house.
#48 & 50, I have a hard time believing any sales person. Thank you for internet reviews on product.
And for sex workers..... Strippers are doing their job to get as much money out of you as possible, if you got burned they did their job well. SP's I have more trust in as they know the price they are getting right from the start. Just keep it as a business relationship and all should go well.
My 2 cents.

johnhenrygalt, you are using the narrower interpretation of the word. Here is the definition of the word profession:

Profession:

Noun
  • A paid occupation, esp. one that involves prolonged training and a formal qualification.
  • A body of people engaged in a particular profession.
Synonyms
occupation - vocation - trade - calling - metier

After what we saw lately from the police... those jerks beating up a suspect who was already laying down and ready to just be cuffed without any resistance... then yeah can't say i trust them too much.

Way too low / way too high. It is a matter of perception. In the sex workers there is a mix of street girls. As far as #1 firefighters, I know a store that had a small fire in the middle of the night. The owner was called an arrived an hour after the fire was put out and his store was looted by firemen with sticky hands. He has it all on camera but did not do anything about it.

firemen with sticky hands. .
There are "bad apples" in any group of people. However, if you examine those at the top of the list:

1. Firefighters
1. Paramedics
3. Rescue volunteers
4. Nurses
5. Pilots
6. Doctors
7. Pharmacists

what they all have in common is that you will trust these people with your life. "Bad apples" are the rare exception in this group. On the other hand, for those at the bottom of the list:

48. Insurance salespeople
49. Politicians
50. Door-to-door salespeople

honesty is the rare exception .
