Chief Dean Byrd with the Mason County Sheriff's Office says the crime has affected even seasoned professionals.
"I talked to a dispatcher last night, who, when she called me to tell me the little girl had not made it, was crying. In my 37 years I have not encountered anything so horrific and senseless," he says.
