Favourite five K D films:

1. Spartacus
2. Ace in the Hole
3. Lonely are the Brave
4. Paths of Glory
5. Champion

Helped break the Hollywood blacklist of the 50s, a true champion!

Totally agree Church...and yes Meta both Spartacus and Paths of Glory are great films. Two Kubrick classics.

1. Spartacus
2. The Vikings
3. In Harms Way
4. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
5. Gunfight at the OK Corral

RIP to the iconic actor.

I want to see Paths to Glory. It has to be the first anti-war film. Maybe All Quiet on the Western Front is but this would be close.

-Gunfight at the OK Coral
-Paths of Glory
-Champion
-Lonely are the Brave
-Tough Guys
-20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
-In Harm's Way
-Lust for Life
-The Final Countdown

There are still many Kirk Douglas movies that i've yet to see and may one day rank among his best movies.

He was never better than in the little-known, incredibly-cynical, way-ahead-of-its-time, "Ace in the Hole," where he played a ruthless, disgraced newspaper reporter trying to get back to the big time in NYC.

It was the film Billy Wilder made after "Sunset Boulevard," but even darker ....

I had never heard of 'Ace in the Hole' until now so i'll keep an eye out for it. A couple of pretty good Kirk Douglas movies that weren't mentioned could have made my list: "Last Train from Gun Hill" and "Detective Story". I also liked the Australian-made "The Man from Snowy River" when it first came out more than three decades ago.

Kirk was a great actor and a great man! And his son Michael - a chip off the old block - in my opinion, is the best actor of our generation!
