Have any of you guys bought the Amazon Echo Dot? My 85 year old father, who is not really the most tech savvy guy in the world, surprised me by buying one of the lower end models for around $20. I was very surprised that this little device was able to play quality sound music- anything you command Alexa to play. In addition to this my oral surgeon also has one. When his assistant asked me what music I wanted to hear for the procedure and I said Steely Dan, she commanded Alexa to play Steely Dan. And for the next 45 minutes I heard pretty much every good song this band ever put out.

Anyway, I have my eye on this model. Do any of you guys have this one?

I have the Echo Dot as well as several 4th Generation Echos. I can highly recommend them.

It is easy to set up, and you can theoretically have one in each room and have them all playing your favorite music at the same time. You can also use them to communicate with other rooms. They are quite versatile.

Ditto, for the price it's a pretty decent device. I also have an older generation model, so can't specifically comment on the model you are interested in, but it is a great device for seniors (not you of course!). I got my mom one too since it was so easy to use.

I just ordered the Echo 4th Generation. $106 with tax, estimated delivery March 25-27. What I am hoping to do is pair it with my TV soundbar and subwoofer, thereby creating a 3 speaker, stereo effect in the TV room.

I have an Echo Dot and Echo Show 10 and the Echo Show 5. Honestly, I wish I could return my Echo Shows, they are very laggy. The Echo Dot is great for the price.

The sound on the Dot sucks, but I have Sonos around my house and control things with the Alexa devices.

One thing did not mention regarding my father's Echo Dot: supposedly it is programmed so that Alexa only obeys my father's voice based on voice recognition from 4 voice samples my father gave to Alexa. However when I spoke to the Dot and commanded Alexa to play music or radio stations, my commands were obeyed dutifully. My father and I concluded my voice sounds like his and Alexa was fooled into thinking I was my father.

Though I don't have experience with the Echo speakers, I don't think you can pair an Echo speaker with any regular soundbar and subwoofer. You might be able to pair it with speakers that use bluetooth.

But the Echo works on your home's wireless network so you really need other speakers that run on your wireless network. One example is Sonos speakers (I have 3 of them in my home--two Ones and a Five). Sonos speakers have much higher audio quality and are, of course, more expensive than Echo speakers. The latest models of Sonos speakers also have Alexa functionality built in to the speakers. I don't use that feature (I am an Apple guy and I use my iPhone to control the Sonos Speakers.

I highly recommend Sonos speakers as long as you care more about audio quality and are willing to spend the money. Sonos does make a soundbar and a subwoofer in addition to their speakers. The soundbar is expensive and I don't have it but it does offer what you are looking for i.e. the ability to work as a soundbar for TV or a wireless speaker for music from Spotify or Pandora or Amazon Music. But you need an all-Sonos system for everything to work easily and smoothly, such as this $1636 setup:

https://www.sonos.com/en-us/shop/surround-set-beam-sub-one

But you don't have to buy everything at once. I started with one Sonos speaker and later added 2 more for other rooms.

A few more links about Sonos:

Other major audio companies like Sony and Bose have introduced wireless speaker systems similar to Sonos. You can see and try Sonos and other speakers in your local electronics store such as Best Buy.

Good advice as always by the captain. I also doubt that you can pair such a speaker with a soundbar & its subwoofer. From my experience you can pair the same brand & types of speaker together or a speakers connected with either an optic audio cable or BT to a tv that allows this. I recently bought a new LG C1 series 4K tv for my living room and it has this feature. But my other tv (Panasonic) that i bought 7 years ago doesn’t have it. It’s either the tv speaker or connectivity to a different speaker or sound system via BT or wired optical cable.

I use various sound setups for my tv sound depending what i’m watching & the mood i’m in. I either use the tv’s speakers (which are surprisingly very good), my Panasonic sound board which the tv lays on, my Panasonic 5.1 home theatre system or my Sony jukebox system. I’m considering upgrading to a premium sound system that has Dolby Atmos (since my new tv offers that feature) but still doing my research & debating if it’s worth the cost.

As for all my other sound devices i’ve always been big on Bose speakers so i use several and i love each one i have. Using the Bose app on my Apple devices i can pair two of the same two Bose speakers together. However not all Bose speakers are compatible to one another for this feature to work.

Anyways during my research about upgrading to a Dolby Atmos featured soundbar i was surprised to learn during my research that Bose soundbars are not high up the list & surprised at how well regarded Sonos soundbars & speakers are. I always knew that Polk & JBL speakers/sound systems are well regarded but surprised other brands are (over Bose).

I have a Sony Smart TV and the TV, Bose sound bar and Bose subwoofer all work off the Wifi network. So I assume there is a way to make the Echo function as a third speaker in a pairing with the other 2. A menage a trois of speakers, if you will. If that somehow does not work, there is a cable connection method from what I could see on my father's Echo Dot, which will serve as a conduit towards the pairing. The subwoofer is already paired to the soundbar when the TV is turned on.

Note that I can use my cellphone as a remote control device on the TV. I have Hulu on my phone and I can go to any Hulu channel I want, or to Netflix, by simply clicking a program onto the TV. If I can also hook my cellphone into the Echo and speak to Alexa, I see no reason why this cannot be done remotely (the speaker Menage A Trois). I will figure it out.

One other thing that fascinates me about this AI is the choices Alexa makes. My father, knowing I like Steely Dan, said to Alexa, "play Steely Dan", without choosing any particular song. Alexa chose to start by playing Deacon Blues, and followed that with Black Cow. Those are good songs, but if I would have guessed, Alexa would have started off with more well known songs like "Peg", or "Hey Nineteen." How did she make those song selections? Then my father asked Alexa to play Neil Diamond without specifying any particular song, and Alexa chose some obscure song I did not immediately recognize. Of course if you ask her to play a specific song, she immediately will do so.

My father, being 85 and not always able to remember things quickly, often asks Alexa that which he cannot remember. We were talking about Apple and my father mentioned that there is a Polish co-founder of Apple, but he could not remember his name. So he asked "Alexa, who are the founders of Apple?" And she ticked off all 3 founders including the Polish guy, Steve Wozniak. He also has Alexa remember his task list for the week and he asked her the task list and she read it off to him. These Echos, as mentioned earlier in the thread, are a GREAT present for an elderly relative, so long as they still have the majority of their wits about them. Which my father fortunately does.

BTW he is on a tech roll as he also recently purchased on his own one of those iRobot Roombas:
These things are fascinating but his dog is a bit freaked out by it. She chases and barks at it, but when it makes a robotized movement, she jumps back, as if freaked out. She does not know what to make of it, and cannot seem to decide whether it is friend or foe.

I think it depends on which Bose sound bar and subwoofer you have.

Currently, Amazon Alexa works with QC35 II, Headphones 700, Home Speaker 300, Smart Speaker 500, Portable Smart Speaker, Smart Soundbar 300, Soundbar 500, and Smart Soundbar 700. Learn how to set up Amazon Alexa for smart speakers, Headphones 700, QC35 headphones II, and QC35 II Gaming Headset.

Captain-

Thanks for your posts. I have the Bose Soundtouch 300 Soundbar and 300 Subwoofer. They do in fact pair with Alexa, check this out:
So the "Ménage A Trois" of Smart Speaker Sound will be coming soon to my TV room: Alexa, Bose Soundbar and Bose Subwoofer. LOL.

BTW I paid $1500 for that Soundbar and Subwoofer a few years back. I figured if its smart it can't be dumb. I am guessing smart speakers have become a lot cheaper since.

I have an Echo Dot that I received as part of a promo from Amazon, I think it cost me $5.99 Cdn. I use it all the time, it's in my office and since I've been working from home for 2 years I have the news on, music when I want it or ask it questions when I have something I don't want to look up. Sound quality is pretty good although audiophiles would certainly want more.

This morning I asked Alexa, "Alexa, which came first, the chicken or the egg?"

Alexa said, "Dinosaur eggs were around many years before chickens, so I am going to go with the egg." I thought this was a very reasonable response to an ages-old question. So I guess it's now settled.
