If you are going to commit a crime canada is the perfect place to do it, it doesn't make much difference what crime you commit you basically get a slap on the wrist wether it is your first crime or your 50th. Remember lets not be to hard on the criminals and thugs amongst us as it is not politically correct.

That crime deserved life in prison.

What he got was 1 year house arrest.

I hardly think he deserved life in prison for what was essentially an accident. He was driving under the speed limit, he wasn't drunk, and the guy he hit was legally over the limit at 0.11 and passed him on the right side driving a scooter. If he had remained at the scene of the accident it would have made no difference in the tragic outcome as the victim was killed instantly and he would most likely have faced no charges at all.

The guy panicked and ran. The only thing he is guilty of is leaving the scene of an accident and that is what he was sentenced for. If he was speeding or drunk, then I'd support a charge of vehicular manslaughter but he was neither while the deceased was both drunk and driving dangerously. Sentencing him to a prison term wouldn't change anything. I have no problem with the judge's decision.

Being a Montreal local that drives a car everywhere. I Have hit many cyclists and drove off. They are everywhere listening to there i pods and not even looking at where they are going. I once hit a young punk working as a bike courrier flying down the street in the rain. He hit the brakes and went over the handle bars head first into my car. He made a huge dent in the car with his head and when he got up he punched my hood and made another big dent. He then peddled off to make his delivery but I chased him down in my car and managed to get my hands on him. Lets just say he wont be making any more runs with that bicycle. And he wont ever punch another mans car out of agravation for his own reckless endangerment. He did get my plate number and I ended up getting the same judgement as the man that killed the scooter guy. Im with techman on this one.

I have never understood why two people who fire a gun with the intention to kill are treated differently by the law if one hits and the other misses. Similarly here, how did the driver know that the guy he hit couldn't have been saved if he had stopped, offered whatever assistance he could and called an ambulance. I agree that life in prison is harsh in a society given the punishments in our country for inflicting injuries intentionally, but the slap on the wrist for leaving (for all he knew) a human in desperate need of assistance on the road seems far too lenient to me.
