Starting tomorrow...but the full plan will take 10 years to implement. That's one bullet for each year. Right now they just have the gun.

This came about as a result of a specific incident earlier this year in which two unarmed Canadian border guards in B.C. abandoned their posts after being informed that two fugitive murder suspects were headed their way from California. The fugitives were subsequently apprehended by armed U.S. law enforcement agents, something that the Canadian media rather shamefully did not tell its readers. The incident was seen as a huge embarassment for the liberals and led Harper to promise that the border guards would be armed.

I don't own a gun, and I've never felt the need for one, AND I live in the US and have been through the worst neighborhoods in Chicago and DC late at night.

BUT ...

A lot of Americans do own guns, often several guns. I have many friends who are gun enthusiasts. Especially, in places like Montana, you get a lot of crazy seperatists. If they're in trouble with the law, Canada is right next door ... so I can understand if at least, the land and sea border guards are armed, especially at remote, unpopulated crossings.

Canadian cops are armed, so I don't see why Canadian border guards aren't.

Homeland Security's job is to keep terrorists out, not to keep our criminals from fleeing to Canada. HS could give two shits about criminals fleeing to Canada, that is the FBI's responsibility (or local LE, if State lines are not crossed), but only up to the border. After that our criminals become YOUR problem (Whitey Bulgur, etc.)

Either you want to welcome our criminals, or not. Keeping your border guards unarmed and having them abandon their posts whenever there is a fugitive on his way, is going to encourage our criminals to flee into Canada.

And V11 - you are welcome to host our criminals, if you would like. Tell Whitey I said hello!

If they don't want to be armed then they can look for another job. Personally I think that those responsible for guarding our border crossings should be armed.

Flying over those area's does not count as 'being thru' those areas . If you walked thru the WORST neightborhoods in Chicago or DC you'd be talking about the latest gun you just picked up

Necessity!

I find Canadian border guards rude and aggressive at times. We do need more recourse when dealing with them for sure. They do not always exercise the best judgement I agree. That said, with the state of organized crime and terrorists it is just plain idiocy not to arm them, if not for our safety then their own. I believe I was listening to a debate on the subject on radio the other day and border guards out west bravely seized a shipment of drugs and arrested the perpetrators. The RCMP was extremely slow to respond. When they finally did their only comment was to castigate the guards for risking their lives. Apparently these shipments often are escorted and cross at obscure border crossings. It is a shame but that is the world we live in. Not much fun but there it is.
