Ferrari to leave F1 in 2010...

Will Ferrari and Renault leaving F1 mean the end of F1 as we know it?

OK, screw baseball, hockey, basketball and football...a real crisis is brewing!!!

It seems that Ferrari and Renault will leave the F1 circus in 2010 if the planned changes including a spending cap are put in place. Ferrari is the only team to compete in every F1 season since the inception of F1 and Renault also has a great history in the sport.

So what do you think? Will F1 racing be the same without Ferrari and Renault or will it make no difference to you?

I think they just want to make this thing competitive. Look at it, its boring to know that the winner each year will be a Ferrari or a Mclaren pilot...

Not this year. Brawn-Mercedes is running away with things in their first year of existence while Ferrari and McLaren are way down in the standings. Even Red Bull who are running Renault engines are outpacing both Renault and Ferrari combined!

I didn't followed it at all this year, to be honest im not much of a fan, but i saw resume on tv past seasons, and Mclaren and Ferrari have been in the top spot for like 10 years...remember Schumacher was the top guy for so long and Courltard was a Mclaren pilot most of the time in the top 3 or so, and last season at red bull he didn't do shit.

Maybe they change something this year, but anyway Brawn-Mercedes still have the mercedes part of Mclaren-Mercedes so i guess they use similar stuff. Im just surprise to see Ferrari so down.

But last year it was ferrari vs mclaren til the end, like many season before that.

If you've been to a race or watched one on TV in the last five years you no doubt noticed that over half the crowd cheer for Ferrari. Last year just with Michael Schumacher's retirement both the TV ratings and race attendance were down so it's not hard to imagine what would happen if the whole team left.

I don't believe they will end up leaving though because other teams have already expressed the same opinion as Ferrari. Renault said yesterday they're gone too if the budget changes are enforced so the FIA will have to cave.

FIA tend to be pig headed, though. If they refuse to back down, this could lead to a new racing series led by Ferrari. In the end this might be a good thing for Montreal as they would probably be interested in running a race here.

Maybe FIA could have a F1 series featuring Smart cars. ;)

i'm a big f1 fan because i love the hi-tech cars and the road courses. but recently i saw a show about some x-f1 drivers who jumped to nascar, and their feeling is... "f1 is about the cars. nascar is about racing... and i like to race."

look at the current f1 standings vs. last year... did hamilton & massa suddenly forget how to race, or did button, barrichello & vettel finally learn to drive?

f1 will survive w/out ferrari.

No other sport gives back to automotive world like FI racing does.
F1 is also a testing ground for many of these teams, it helps push the boundaries of automotive technology and many of these advances are later seen on road cars a few years later.

F1 is about technology, perfection and our capability to surpass what is unthinkable.

Just in terms of safety (which was not always the case in F1) we have leaped further in the last 15 years than from the inception of motor racing.

La Scuderia, puts alot of money into this sport, and rightly so is the cornerstone of F1.

A team will spend 10 million dollars to reduce the weight of a chassis by 30 oz ,, it will ponder a fitting to a millionth of inch in order to gain a 1/100 sec advantage. The technology is just fantastic, the research and development poured into these cars is just phenomenal. And it takes money lots of it and Ferrari is a leader!

I remember when renault first came out with its twin turbo engines, in the 70's it fought for 3 seasons to get them right and then dominated. In the early 80's turbos were seen in many NA road cars, with unusual reliability, thanks to F1.

With a budget cap, we will see the end of R&D , and boundaries being pushed only to be replaced by a world of fictional make believe made for TV entertaiment.

The difference in between Nascar and F1??

Nascar is a show, F1 is a sport!!

Ferrari is making a threat to make its point that it doesn't like the budget cap as currently proposed. While the FIA may be serious in its proposal, Bernie Ecclestone, who still controls the commercial rights to F1, will force his buddy Max Mosley (head of the FIA) to make a compromise with Ferrari and the other unhappy teams. F1 cannot afford to lose Ferrari, so things will get worked out.

Bernie and Max are world-class assholes, but they are not so stupid as to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. I guarantee that Ferrari will be on the grid next year...and I am still somewhat hopeful that we will get a chance to see the 2010 grid make a stop in Montreal, which is still the best overall F1 venue in the world for the true fans of the sport.

I always though that branding was the sole reason for the auto industry to take part in F1 racing and that the real technological influence of F1 on today’s grand public cars, under 35 000$, was at best marginal. The goals are not the same, designs are not comparable and materials are different. But I am not at all a specialist. What are the technological breakthroughs made in F1 that had a significant impact on the grand public car industry?

We can start with electronic stability control, transmission, suspension,tire, traction control,and most of the electronic on bord.

Inspired from memory, and I will dig some facts up via Google to back this up.

But Lotus perfected stress aluminium skin, and perfected monocoque in 63 , guess what what we are driving now.

Fuel injection was perfected as far back as the late 50's

In 66' the famous Ford EDIS system was being perfected on Jackie's race Brabhams.

The venerable wish bone Jaguar suspension cut its teeth in F1..

Variable geometry steering components, rear brake booster , suspension struts all were perfected on F1 circuits.

For tires, well look at the abuse we put on our tires, the conditions that they are subjected too and then look at what Bridgestone, Pirreli and Michelin have learned on F1 circuits!

Lightweight carbon fiber panels ! Just the innovations in manufacturing alone is felt 100 fold in our everyday lives. Guess were they were deployed ???

Electronics,

ECU software design alone took us out of the dark ages. variable fuel and ignition mapping alone saved this planet millions of tons of pollutants and this technology was perfected on F1 circuits.

Not to mention the advances and innovations in engine management systems, and telemetry (technology being used in marine applications, they have remote hook ups for engine diagnostics and repair!!! )

Tire pressure sensors , guess what ??? Yes you are right! F1 perfected.

and now I am not talking about indirect benefits, such as wind tunnel technology, manufacturing processes, and the sheer volume of data gathered which helps engineering gurus around the world.

Look at KERS see if that technology does not show up on cars in the next 3 to 5 years..
