(French professor Jocelyn) Couture-Nowak was born in Montreal in 1958 and lived both in Quebec and Nova Scotia before moving to Blacksburg with her husband in 2001.

Before moving to Virginia, Couture-Nowak helped found the Ecole Acadienne de Truro in Nova Scotia, which opened in 1997 to enable francophone families to have a safe school environment where they could have a French-language education.
