The gas companies are bleeding off inventories because that have been charging high prices during the vacation period. I do not expect that these relativley lower prices will last long as the August futures prices for crude oil is at $75.00 + per barrel. So take advantage of the ( relativley ) low prices now.

Thanks for the tip J.P. I've got a ton of driving to do and have been thinking the prices can't stay at their relatively low levels, so might get doing it.

If you just going to throw your hands in the air and give up, .......................

...........you may as well bend over and get corn holed with a gas pump nozzle by the gas companies. If we all do our part, we can bring the oil companies to their knees.

Gas at $1.00 per liter.

Monday, August 30, 2007

Gas is at $1.00 a liter at noon today, I suspect that the gas companies have lovered the gas prices for 2 reasons.

1) To bleed off supplies, as they have new shipments of oil stemaing down the St. laurent river to the refineries in the east end of Montreal.

2) To get prices to $1.00 or maybe even to $0.98 a liter so that they can hit you with the 10 cent increase. They are trying to get us use to these increases so that it will be a usual event and no one will put up a fuss about it.

The gas companies know that there are people like myself that will take advantage of the lower prices at the begining of the week, this benefiets them by bleeding off supply. They also know there are people like Zonealarm that do not care and are willing to pay the higher prices later in the week. Takeadvantage of the lower prices now, because the August futures price for crude oil is at $75 per barrel. i do not think these low prices are here to stay.

buying consortium

I have been thinking about this for a while and the only way I can think of to get steady and significantly lower prices would be for large groups of citizen (individuals) to join together in a co-op style arrangement to import gas (it would have to already be refined) directly from the cheapest places on earth such as the middle east, Russia, or Peru.

If, for example, 10,000 people from a certain area joined together to import gas and run their own (members only) gas station, I believe there could be astronomical savings in the long run.

Of course there would be high venture start-up costs to cover such things as research, legal (import, documentation, tax issues etc), tanker charter, port fees, and the purchase of a service center. Over a short time, however, I believe these initial costs would be offset by members' ability to purchase gas at wholesale prices. Of course nothing would stop this consortium for selling off extra gasoline to other stations at wholesale, or from selling direct to "non-member" customers at the going rate...

I wonder what others think of this? Please shoot holes in this idea... I must be overlooking something that would make this nonfeasible, impractical, or otherwise impossible...

Is Esso shaking in their boots?

Probably not just yet:)

Zonealarm,

You do not have to rush to a gas station whenever the price drops, you do not even have to watch gas prices. You can simply buy you gas at the begin of the week on Mondays to Wednesdays when the prices are lower, rather than later in the week and weekends when they are higher.

Doingittodeath,

The gas companies are just like any other large business, it is a giant maching that has to regulate input to output. The gas companies lower the prices so that they can bleed off supply, and then raise prices to maximize income for their product. Hurricanes do have an effect on gas prices and the gas companies will take maximum advantge of these situations. Reducing consumption and taking advantage of lower prices will in the long run keep prices down. If consumers buy any product regardless of price, then the price will go up.

Time yourself.

If you time yourself, you can buy exactly the amount of gas you need to get you through the week. If you have special circumstances that require more gas for the week then buy the amount you need at the higher price. Gas up regularly early in the wek and you will be doing yourself and the other consumers a favor. You will also be saving money 3 or 4 or $5 a week times 52 weeks a year is a tidy sum that no one else is going to give you for no reason. I will bet you that if a HDH promised you a freeby if you bought all you gas on Mondays and Tuesdays, you would do it. Here you have a gauranteed session with a HDH if you do it. Just use all the money you save and make your own choice of HDHs at the end of the year.

P.S. If your car consumes 15% more gas because it has a full tank, there is something wrong with your car. You also do not have to fill your car up, just put in the amount you need.

$1.07 a litre

I find it strange that in st. jerome last week gas was at a 1.07 a litre and yesterday it was the same price. As soon as you exit the city prices are 1.16 a litre. Anyone know why?

Le Costco de cet endroit est l'un des rares au Quebec a vendre du gas et ça ne fait pas partie de leur plan d'affaire de rire du monde dans la face comme les autres font. :)

In the city, there are more gas stations, so more competition, and also a bigger volume of gas is sold: therefore prices will be lower and gas stations will have near identical prices.

Outside the city, there are less people (so less gas sold), fewer gas stations, and they are physically farther apart. Also, cost to deliver the gas to them is higher. Therefore you can expect higher prices, and more price difference between each station.

Supply and demand at work.

Kepler...........maybe my post was not clear.....sorry for that. In montreal gas is 1.16 a litre. In St.Jerome, much smaller than Montreal, gas is 1.07.

Wilko...........the price posted was from a Canadian Tire located at the major shopping mall in St. Jerome.

The gas companies yo-yo the prices.

They are playing a game where they get us use to paying higher prices. They sometimes will lower prices at some gas stations or in some areas to get rid of inventory. In the long run we pay high prices more often then we pay low prices. In usual times the gas prices are lower early in the week from Mondays to Wednesdays, then the prices go higher on Thursdays and towards the week end. This week the prices were extaordinarily high, so there was no increas in the middle of the week.

Price in st-jerome is lower than average cause theres a costco in the area.... you cant sell gas at 1.16 when there's one at 3-4 street selling at 1.07 or whatever price. 365 days a year gas is cheaper in st-jerome since costco started selling gas there... I wish the one in marche central had a gas station aswell :(

There could be two other factors at work: (1) Montreal island has significantly higher taxes than other cities (2) some other costs are lower outside the city, like the price of land

The "prices go up on weekends" seems to be a myth.

With oil going through $102 a barrel, it's normal that prices will keep going up. Where do you think prices will go when 2 billion Indians and Chinese start driving cars?

When that happens, I'll take out my bike or public transit in the winter. I see us paying 2$/L withing 3-5 years if oil production remains constant.

Agreed. Not to mention that implementing Kyoto probably means a huge increase in the gasoline tax.

And so what? Low gas cost is not a right. High gas costs will encourage people to drive less, drive slower (better fuel economy), drive smaller cars, drive hybrids, use public transit or walk, which will all reduce pollution. Too bad the population doesn't pressure the government to raise gas taxes and prices.

I agree with u kepler.............let's raise the price of gas and watch the rate of inflation go thru the roof while ur income remains the same.
