buying consortium
I have been thinking about this for a while and the only way I can think of to get steady and significantly lower prices would be for large groups of citizen (individuals) to join together in a co-op style arrangement to import gas (it would have to already be refined) directly from the cheapest places on earth such as the middle east, Russia, or Peru.
If, for example, 10,000 people from a certain area joined together to import gas and run their own (members only) gas station, I believe there could be astronomical savings in the long run.
Of course there would be high venture start-up costs to cover such things as research, legal (import, documentation, tax issues etc), tanker charter, port fees, and the purchase of a service center. Over a short time, however, I believe these initial costs would be offset by members' ability to purchase gas at wholesale prices. Of course nothing would stop this consortium for selling off extra gasoline to other stations at wholesale, or from selling direct to "non-member" customers at the going rate...
I wonder what others think of this? Please shoot holes in this idea... I must be overlooking something that would make this nonfeasible, impractical, or otherwise impossible...
Is Esso shaking in their boots?
Probably not just yet
