LE using your driveway as a speed trap

Would you be ok with LE parked in your driveway and using radar to catch

speeders?

Are they even allowed to? Its private property.

I see them almost every weekend in someones driveway on a nice summer

day on the Met service road in TMR right before you hit the rockland

shopping mall.

Whatever the legalities, any driveway owner may be reluctant to ask them to move for fear that they will cause him grief.

As far as I am aware, in Montreal it is illegal for the police to set up a radar trap or any other kind of traffic surveillance on private property.

But it's possible that the same rules do not apply on the South Shore as it is not under the same jurisdiction.

If only I knew...
It doesn't need to be legal, it only need not to get complaints! Once somebody contest the legality of the operation, if it's not legit, it will have to stop but, if nobody complain...

We'll know who's right when somebody go to court and contest a ticket on the ground the proof was gained illegally.

If I owned the driveway where they were parked, I'd be tempted to call the police to complain that there was a car parked in my driveway and could hey have it removed?
I know, not the best way to earn brownie points with LE, but it would be tempting just to see how they reacted.

A buddy of mine had his driveway used for a stakeout once regarding a drug bust. Plain car, plain driver... My buddy couldn't get in his driveway so he went to see the driver and asked what the fuck he was doing there! The cop showed him his badge and asked him to call the station and talk to a specific inspector to corroborate. The cop did ask if it was ok to park there once in a while. It lasted about 1 week, different cars, different guys.

There's no such thing as brownie points when it comes to LE

With all the potholes and the condition of that stretch of road, it's hard to imagine speeding there.
However, it does feed right off the Met where people come flying off and just don't slow down.

Speed Traps

The Montreal police now have a new mandate:

Ville de Montreal Tax Collectors

In one year traffic fines have jumped from about $ 44 million to $ 88 million in
Montreal. These are approximate figures reported in the media.
Call it "recession policing".

Can you think of a faster way to boost Ville de Montreal coffers, using City employees?

The speed trap on Cote de Liesse/ Met exit in TMR has been a popular "money spot" for years. The speed limit is 50 kph, which is hard to achieve right after exiting from the Met, short of slamming on your brakes. That is exactly the reason the cops set up the radar gun at the exit.

The real solution is simply to drive at 50 kph, unless you wish to make a "voluntary" contribution to the City's deficit. ;)

My issue is not the speed trap itself, its LE using peoples driveways/private

property as a hiding spot.

I'd let them. My house is strategically placed and there is a lot of extreme speeding even though it's a 30kph park zone.

By extreme I mean I've clocked some cars at over 70kph with a radar gun (I own one).
