I have to tell you noone could have been happier than me when the Islanders beat New Jersey yesterday and hence eliminated the Leafs from further action. As a long time Montreal fan nothing would have ticked me off more than if the Leafs had go on to the playoffs because they beat Montreal. Now all I can say is welcome to the sidelines and LOL at least 41 years without a Stanley Cup...LOL

I was also happy that there will be no Laffs in the playoffs but all in all it doesn't really matter. Even if by some miracle they had made it, it would have been over after the first round. Of course we may have witnessed a new NHL record being set by Raycroft for most goals allowed.
Yes the fans are largely to blame. Loyalty is wonderful but when you not only tolerate but actually support and praise ineptitude then you are guaranteeing that it will continue. If the hopeless and hapless Leaf fans went on strike by boycotting their pathetic team, ownership and management would be forced to offer a better product in order to woo the fans back and generate revenue. Simple business economics: keep the customer satisfied or go out of business.
But if the customers are too uninformed, weak and gullible (as Leafs and Canadiens fans are) then of course ownership will continue with its less than half-assed attempts to ice an NHL calibre team. Result: the pitiful and embarrassing charade that passes for NHL hockey in 2 cities that were once proud franchises ( until a couple of decades ago in Mtl and until 4 decades ago in Hogtown).

Doc for all the reasons you mentioned (as well as several that you didn't) I agree with you that the Leafs are more likely than the Habs to improve...and you KNOW I am not a Leafs fan!
Really though I don't see the Leafs improving much either. Once the rot sets in to an organization (and the rot is deeply entrenched at the Air Canada Centre!) it only gets worse, much like an impacted tooth.
On a different note, although I do enjoy watching the Leafs get their asses kicked, I must say that I am happy that they, the Habs and the rest of the NHL's bottom-feeders are now gone. All the teams in the playoffs may not be great but at least they are respectable.
