I don't have a data package on my phone - most of the time I don't need it and when I do, there are lots of free hot spots. That works most of the time but Tim Hortons & others block sites like MERB. When in Montreal, MERB is avery valuable resource for a gentleman on the hunt. Can anybody provide some advice here? Much obliged.

You can't sign on to MERB in the Montreal airport either.

Funny enough but McDonalds doesn't have the same restrictions as Tim's

Haha yes i did used Mcdonald's wifi a few times for merb checking. Also the emily gamelin park near the bus station didn't had that restriction a few years ago, but its been a long while since i used there wifi.

If you really need to use merb on your phone you can unlock your data and pay "a la carte" for just that specific time. May cost you 5 to 10$ depending on how many data it process but its not a big lot. That is for a person living in QC, dunno how it work if your compagny is american tough.

You could also try to conect to an hotel WIFI, some are restricted with passwords but others do not. I never had a problem going on merb at either hotels i used.

I always do it at the Eaton Centre especially when I am having lunch at the food court.

I've had success with most restaurants in Montreal. Also, many hotels have a free wifi access in the lobby or common areas. As FedEx said, most public wifi does block sites like MERB. But if you walk into pretty much any bar in Montreal, you can have a beer, log onto their wifi, and surf away without any restrictions!

Reporting back about vpn : it works for MERB, but some provider sites not working. I've had mixed success with hotels - Chabrol no problem LOL. Will try thegreatwaloo's suggestion regarding bars next time I'm in Montreal.
