It's no big deal. I've seen the same thing happen in Mtl whenever some Leafs fans would be over-celebrating their victory after a game. I've never witnessed any blows or fights, but it was close. People can sure act stupid at times when at a sporting event. A few years ago, i was at the Bell Center at a boxing card. Just prior to the main fight, which was between Arturo Gatti & some other stiff, i bumped into rocker Eric Lapointe at ringside & began chatting it up with him. We had met a couple of years earlier at some other place & to my surprise he remembered me. Anyways, he was on his way to the washroom & he couldn't wait to see the main fight. He never showed up. At the start of the fight, the guy beside me who had seen us talking asked me: "Where's Lapointe? He never came back." True, he was indeed missing from his table. The following day, i'm driving towards Ottawa for a meeting & i stopped at a foodcourt to have a bite. As i'm about to start eating, i notice on the front page of the Journal de Mtl that Eric Lapointe was assaulted in a washroom at the Bell Center just prior to the Gatti fight. Wow!!! Supposedly, two or three Hells Angels who weren't pleased with some comments Lapointe had made previously about them decided to teach him a lesson & he wound up leaving with a major black eye after a beating. He refused to press charges (shocking! LOL). Good thing my bladder was holding up that night, or else i might have wound up going to the washroom with him! Ouch!!

I've seen a few brawls break out in Philly but they're usually with Ranger fans who think they're tough and try to act that way... Per-lockout I had some Ottawa folks sitting behind me for a game, and while they were heckled a bit on the way to the bathroom, they weren't threatened.

It's OK to cheer for your team at the Wachovia Center but don't antagonize.

I'been in Boston twice,in the old Gardens,in the early 90's.Patrick Roy was in nets for the Habs.Although I was with friends and GF,we didn't dare wearing Habs jersey,yet we would cheer for the Habs and speak french.We were called all kinds of name;Frogs,fags,bastards,assholes,..even anti-canadian rants;they would mock the famous ''EH!'' to us.
But none of us got physically threathened.Let alone beat up.I did noticed something;The Bostonians hate us and the Habs a lot more than we hate them and the Bruins.They were rowdy,mean,sarcastic.Some of them wore t-shirts that said ''Canadians suck!''.
But outside the garden,it was all too nice.Peolple were generally nice to us despite our accented english and poor mastering of it.
I wouldn't generalize and call them all full of a....hole.Some are,of course.

Btw,in both those games Habs won!!!

Everytime you're at a sporting event & there's booze involved, you'll have a few fights among fans (and friends!). Just take the Blue Jays opener this year....it was fights galore in the stands!! This is why the team has decided to make adjustments to its liquor/beer sales policy & if things didn't improve, they were going to cancel the Tuesday cheap tickets promo altogether. I tip my hat to management for stepping in quickly & putting a stop to this nonsense. When people go to a live sporting event, they don't expect getting mugged by a few drunkards in the process. A few years ago, some drunk Habs fan threw his beer & took a swing at me (he missed! lol) during a game & we both went at it. I guess he didn't like the fact i was wearing a Maple Leafs sweater & i'd cheer loudly whenever the Leafs scored (at the time, it was 4-1 Leafs). I wound up getting tossed out of the Bell Center (it was known as Molson Center at the time) because of this drunk troublemaker! At least, i got to shake hands with Gump Worseley & a couple of other Habs legends as i was being escorted out.

I wouldn't generalize,like I said earlier.There are stupid unsecure dumbass to be found everywhere,But to beat up an opposing team fan is uncommon in Montreal.Not that we are any better,but you rarely see anything like that.And lets not forget the heated Nordiques vs Canadiens war of the 80's/90's.Lots of hatred between those two teams, fans,writers,yet rarely would you hear about some fans getting beating up by a group of drunken frustrated assholes...

Name calling,yes.Insults,definetely.But fights were uncommon.

Ticket prices at the FLYERS games has reduced the number of IDIOTS that show up for games, so cheering for your team doesn't get you physically accosted... There were a large contigent of HABS fans at the last Flyers versus HABS game and when they started their GO HABS GO it usually brought on the LET'sGO FLYERS chant to drown it out.

BUT... if you stand up and turn around and start rubbing it in to the folks in the stands behind you and you are in the upper bowl back in the corner you may get a bit more than you expected, as they are the cheap seats.

The only real heated rivarly regarding the Flyers is with the Rangers and that is as much a Philly versus New York thing than a hockey thing. No self respecting Philadelphia will take anything from a New Yorker in our own building... but at least we usually fight fare and not try to stick a knife in your ribs from behind...

Did you actually read the article you posted Mass1965? If you had you would have seen that the assailants were from a small, very affluent town about 10 miles north of Boston called Winchester.

Don't paint all Bostonians / Mass people with the same brush, there are assholes everywhere, even in southern NH.

Oh I come by my opinions honestly. I have lived and worked in the New York City/ New Jersey area, The San Francisco Bay area, the LA area, Phoenix Az.
I asked for a transfer to the east coast from California and given the choice asked for something near Boston as I had heard a good things about it from an ex girlfriend. It was living and working there that changed my mind about what I thought about the Boston area.
I tell you I have never seen anything close to the daily road rage I experienced traveling to work in the Boston area, and the other things in the news. I could not believe it. I worked with and developed friends while there. But it was too much so I asked for another transfer.
In my experience, I would say Montreal is the best place in regards to driving or walking and feeling safe. Boston the worst.
So reading that article, was not surprised 20 guys from the Boston area would jump one other. Just my opinion from living and working in the Boston area.

Evidently you still haven't read it thoroughly. The person was assaulted by 2 guys, not 20, had it been 20 I'm sure he wouldn't have suffered "minor" injuries as reported in the article. We get it, you hate Boston, whatever. As I said, don't paint all Bostonians with the same brush.

As for the driving and road rage, if the visitors had any clue how to drive then they wouldn't be subject to the rage they incite. Not our fault "foreigners" (out of towners) can't keep up and drive correctly.

Well not much better can be said about montreal either. If you are not from here there are a great MANY people ready and willing to be rude, aggresive, derrogitory, violent.....

My friends car was rammed when they were picking me up from the hospital. Twice. My friends plate was an Ontario plate.
People get aggressive on the road when they see Ontario plates. I have be antagonised on the street and in stores before I learned french and because I have an accent that does not come from here (most recently a McDICKS drive thru employee as I was paying her a few days ago.)
So, really before poeple have anything to say about how they are treated in other cities, think about how y'all treat the visitors that come here and quite possibly live here.......

I went to Game #3 last Sunday 4/13th in Boston.
We were aproaching the Allston/Brighton Toll Both and saw 4 Canadiens Fans driving by us. They were all dressed with official Canadien Jerseys & had their Habs Flag waving out the window.
We rolled down our window and flashed our Tickets to them.
Just Fans, having good fun.....
They asked us where the Stadium was.
I said just follow us, and we will show you.
I took them right into the Parking Garage.
We spoke about the Love for Hockey (even with the Habs up (that night) 2-0).
After the Game (The B's won 2-1 in OT) we saw these same guys (Fans) in the Garage. We spoke about the Game, and told them to follow is out of the Garage, and I would show them back to Route 93.

Just People, who are Fans of Hockey!
