I'd think one of the ways this arrangement would work is you do regularly have the money to pay rent, just that you decide and the landlord agrees some months the rent payment not always involve fiat currency.

I've read a heck of alot more fantasy of the landlord dealing w/ a tenant would 'can't come up w/ rent what do we work out' than your angle of coming to him/her as being fantasy though.
