Any recommendations for the best Mussels & Frites in the downtown area? Staying at a hotel in the upper west side and meeting a friend and know that's his favorite. Nothing formal, a casual bistro/restaurant. Quality/Freshness is key. (He lives in Toronto and told him I'd prove Montreal has better food...)

Thanks

To my knowledge there's only one restaurant in Montreal which specialty is Mussels and French Fries.

It's L'Actuel , 1194 Rue Peel. Went there several times and the mussels were fresh (it's the main concern - or it should be ! - when we talk of seafoods) and well prepared. It's not quite like Chez Léon (in Brussel) but let's put it that way : L'Actuel is okay.

Bières et compagnie

Bières et Compagnie, at St-Denis and Marie-Anne does them quite nicely (IMHO), and the rest of their beer cuisine menu is quite tasty as well. They are quite busy at peak times. Plus 100 different beers to choose from :D.

I know some guys that are into the mussel thing, They go to buffets that have mussels and add all sorts of sauce from the other trays on the mussels.

Guys, thanks for the recommendations. Quick change of plans, not heading to Montreal tonite. My Toronto friend was able to score tickets for the Miami Heat & Boston Celtics (overpriced beer and hot dogs, but should be an emotionally charged game) so we are staying in Boston for another day. In exchange for tickets, my treat for a good Toronto restaurant Thursday nite.

Will store the names if I need them again.
