Not sure about the Montreal pub scene but what is increasing in Edmonton is small neighbourhood pubs ( 100 to 200 people ) that have great live music... https://youtu.be/hhANLTyiPg0 . The average age of patrons is 35 to 60 and from what I see mushrooms are making a comeback, drug tests can not pick it up and the majority test in the oil patch.
Anyways, personal preference is live bands, rock first followed by blues and jazz... Never catch me on a club with someone scratching a record.

I have been to a few larger venues in Montreal, just looking for pubs that have quality bands playing. I perfer live music over house music, adds so much to the evening.
Drummondville has a couple of pubs like that, majority are French bands but on the occasion an English band plays.
A few of these places in Edmonton call themselves societies, different ( easier ) laws for permits and owners can purchase their alcohol from liquor stores at a cheaper price and sell at a discount.
A place I frequent has no cover charge and all drinks are $5 and the bands are top acts.

I have seen live bands perform at both Irish Embassy and Hurley’s. Usually pretty good bands. Also the food isn’t too bad at the Embassy. These clubs are within a block of each other so you can pub crawl from one to the other with relative ease, even during this current time of harsh winter weather. Just wear the longjohns if you will be out drinking heavily, because if you pass out on Crescent and are mistaken for a homeless it won’t take long for your cock and balls to get frostbitten and that would put a bit of a damper on the trip.

I really love listening to Solstice on most Friday and Saturday nights at Hurley’s. Great Celtic band playing some modern and classic songs. It’s a fun time. Last trip to Montreal in Sept I ended up going late on a Friday night after an appointment and had so much fun that I returned Saturday. Met some hot French Canadian girls but Miranda from Euphoria had worn me out prior so I was useless so didn’t pursue as I normally would. Hurley’s highly recommended, and Bier Mkt bands after 10pm on weekends are hit or miss. Anyone know good live music places earlier in evening (6pm or so)? Seem far and few between up in Montreal compared to NYC

Seen a great band in Edmonton Saturday night, RattPoison..... Damn good, could have been the mushrooms ( found out they can not be traced in a drug test ), pub was called Shakers.
As I said earlier, many venues out here with talented players and was hoping to find some when I return.

Any recommendations for a bar with good live band on a Friday or Saturday early evening? Matbe around 6pm or 7pm. Bars and pubs like that abound around NYC and New Orleans. I usually go to Hurley’s and Bier Mkt as well as Winnie’s but they don’t get going until about 10pm. Thanks!! Places like Upstairs Jazz are fine but looking for something more pub like. Thanks!! I’m finally back up there in 2 weeks!!

If you wanna try something new, maybe get out of your comfort zone, you could go to Les 2 Pierrots.

After two or three beers, you'll be singing in french even if you don't know what your saying... ;)
