I'm retired -55 Yrs old. I would appreciate any recommendations for English speaking areas that are close to good pooning and away from the hustle and bustle of the crowded areas.Thanks.

Dude, let me get this straight. You are flying 3000+ miles to the 2nd largest French speaking city in the world (after Paris) and you only want to only want to deal with English speakers? This isn't Tiajuana or LA or some other 3rd world hellhole. This is an international metropolis where many languages are spoken. I have found that people here are generally friendly and laid back. You won't be shot at for being an outsider. My French skills consist of my barely remembered college courses, but I have never had any major problems communicating. As far as pooning goes, cash is the universal language. Pick up a phrase book for reading street/metro signs and such and you will be surprized that the language barrier is not that big a deal.

Seriously, what riguy said is true, as an anglo you won't have any trouble in Montreal. The only area where you might, is in the eastern end of town, but you probably won't end up there anyway. Any area in Montreal, West Island, NDG, DDO, etc, ... you won't have a problem if you can't speak french. Still, for personal interest, I would recommend taking an intro french course, McGill and Concordia among other places offer language training. By close to pooning, do you mean that you are thinking of outcalls visiting you in your house ? In that case you may not wish to live off the island.

I can understand wanting to know that kind of info if you are moving to a completely new area, and want to fit in in a particular neighbourhood-a good agent will help you get set up in an area that most suits your needs...that being said Montreal has a blaend of English and french neighbourhoods all over but If you are looking to relacate and reside in mostly english areas look into the following areas:

Montreal is excellent!
I only know a few words of french (bonjour, ca va,...) and I have not had ANY problem during my 10 years of stay here in Montreal. This is really a great city with nice people. The only bad thing about Montreal (after the economy) is the terrible road conditions!You should expect EVERYTHING on the road when driving! Really bad asphalt.

I dont know what industry you are involved in but the Quebec economy has been quite strong compared to other provinces.

Well last month's figures of statistics Canada tell another story my friend. The average jobless rate in Canada is 8%, and Quebec's rate is 10%, well above average. Ontario's is around 7%.
