Jean Gagné, 41, shot to death by thieves; friend bound, pistol-whipped and robbed

MONTREAL – A security guard at a resort villa in the town of Sosua in the Dominican Republic has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Quebec City man the night of Dec. 30, according to media reports.

The guard allegedly tipped off two men about the presence of the victim and his friend at the villa, which has only 12 rooms.

Police in the Caribbean nation have also arrested a second man, reports said.

Quebec City resident Jean Gagné, 41, was vacationing with a friend when two men entered their rooms in the middle of the night, according to the Journal de Montréal.

The victim’s friend, who said he did not want to be named, told the Journal that the attackers tied him up with bed sheets. They took his wallet, credit cards and his cellphone, and they pistol-whipped him, demanding his PIN number to get more money.

They finally left the room with him still tied to the bed. Moments later, he heard two gunshots from Gagné's room next door.

Sosua is located on the north coast of the country, just west of Puerto Plata.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Department in Ottawa was not immediately available to comment on the matter early Monday.

Yes, many people go to the DR to get away and relax, the younger wannabee single guys are the ones most often the rude Gringos.

There is danger in the DR due to the worse poverty in the western hemisphere. I have heard of stories where people will follow you around all day to get a hand out of a few pennies because there is not much else to do there.

Which probably still leaves Cuba as a destination of choice. If you're staying
at the resort of a major hotel chain and you remain within its confines, I'd assume
you're relatively safe.

Mind you, with all the scanners they're now installing at airports, a pic of your nekked butt
will probably arrive on someone's website before you actually land at your vacation destination.
Either way, we're all fucked.

It is true that Cuba is one of the safest countries to visit for sun seekers. I wonder what kind of screening process security guards go through when hired by those resorts? I have a feeling that it's not much, and that one day, we'll be hearing of a terrorist attack within one of those resorts.

I can't travel to Cuba, but years ago I travelled to some dicy areas of Mexico and Jamaica and did some things I probably would not recommend to anyone else. In Negril, Jamaica, I met and befriended a guy who worked at my resort (as Captain of the waterskiing boat) and he moonlighted at night as a cabbie. One night my friend and I and hired him, for the paltry sum of $25, to take us on a tour of areas otherwise never seen by the average tourist. This included dinner at an outdoor (open air) restaurant in Negril, Jamaica, exclusively patronized by locals, some local clubs which serviced the locals, and we also went to the cliffs and participated in some highly unregulated (and dangerous) boating activity. The reason why I felt safe with this guy was he seemed to know and was well liked by everyone, he was savvy and he had his own car plus he was employed by a SuperClubs resort. There are some risks you take on intuition and this was one of them.

When I was in Mexico, I stayed at a resort in Cancun and met two very aggressive Canadian women from Calgary, Alberta who asked me if I wanted to go shopping in town with them one day. I figured I would possibly get some sex out of the deal, so I agreed to go with them and basically it became clear to me that while they may have enjoyed my company, they just wanted a guy hanging around with them because they took me to some very dicy looking places and women do not want to be by themselves in such places. There was no other reason for me to come along, but I did get to see what the whole shopping ritual is like in Mexico, and it is different than it is here because everything is a negotiation. I did end up learning a thing or two from these two Canadian babes because they were savvy travellers and shoppers and they knew how to negotiate with the Mexican merchants. They just figured that some of the Mexican guys who saw them by themselves might get the wrong idea that they were available as pieces of ass and that is where I came in, to disabuse any and all Mexican males of such notions by my mere presence.

I don't recall at any time feeling unsafe in either of these countries, or in St. Martin or Turks and Caicos which I visited several times, with the exception that T&C had a very bad problem with wild dogs and cats that roam the beaches when I was there, and they harass tourists more than the locals. There was an incident at the airport in Kingston in which my friend (believe it or not an attorney) was approached by a drug dealer and continued the conversation with him in my presence because he "wanted to hear what the negotiation and prices would be." I completely lost it and told him that if he wanted to spend time in a Jamaican jail he was welcome to do so and he could find another travelling partner, curiousity killed the cat, etc.

In T&C I was approached by a male prostitute, while alone at the resort's bar one night. I had actually travelled with a friend but my friend had gone scuba diving all day, so the male prostitute must have thought I was lonely and wanted my cock sucked. He was right on both counts, but I am 100% heterosexual and only want a woman to suck on my cock, so I basically told him I was heterosexual but thanks anyway.

It used to be standard practice for all hotels to have members of the KGB on staff, they continued to record the comings & goings of tourists for a long while after the Soviet Union fell.
