Storing your sperm

I am currently 37 y/o and single and do not have and children. Over the past few years I have not made starting a family a priority due in part to my focus my career, as well as dealing with depression. My best friend recently had kid #2 and we got into a conversation about how recent health studies have shown that men's sperm begins to degrade in quality sometime in his 30s. As well, children born to fathers a over 35 have increased chance of genetic abnormalities, including Down syndrome and schizophrenia. Another friend recently decided to have his sperm frozen and stored in a sperm bank and recommended I do the same.

Any one else worried about their biological clock and thoughts on storing their sperm? Seems like few negatives other than the cost which I hear is only a couple thousand dollars (and the awkwardness of jerking off in a room into a cup).

Thanks

You might want to look into how frozen sperm maintains (quality wise) after being frozen. I would guess there would be some degradation in the quality of it? no?

Wouldn't a "fresh" batch, whenever you do find a partner, be better than 10 or 15 year-old batch of frozen sperm?

Just a thought.

Look behind you.
I have never heard of the genetic abnormalities with men over 35 before, I know women over that age can have trouble.
I am 57 with a 14 yr old ( never come home from the bar at 4am and ask "are you awake "). You should be more concerned with keeping up with your child if you are older, they take a lot out of you with keeping them busy. Not a fan of frozen sperm either, food goes bad in a freezer also.

No, not if that 'fresh' sperm contains damaged DNA.

The newest research is showing this to be a valid issue. The older you are, the more chance there is that your own DNA has succumbed to damage from any number of factors (age, environmental toxins, radiation, etc).

How long do sperm live after ejaculation?

Answer
from Roger W. Harms, M.D.

The life span of sperm after ejaculation depends on the circumstances.

Sperm ejaculated into a woman's vagina can live in a woman's cervical mucus or upper genital tract for three to five days. Fertilization is possible as long as the sperm remain alive. Sperm ejaculated outside the body might survive in semen — the fluid released during ejaculation — up to a few hours.

Sperm can be preserved for weeks when semen is stored at a lowered temperature — or years when semen is frozen.

What is sperm freezing and storage?

Sperm can be frozen for future use either in artificial insemination or other fertility treatments, or be donated.

Donated sperm has to be stored for six months before it can be used in treatment, in order to screen the donor for infections.

Sperm cells have been frozen and thawed successfully for more than 40 years.
