The Day the Music Died

On February 3, 1959, a small-plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, United States, killed three popular American rock and roll musicians: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. The day was later called The Day the Music Died by Don McLean in his 1971 tribute song about the crash, "American Pie".

Plane crash haunted Waylon Jennings for years

During the early morning hours of February 3, 1959, the charter airplane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (aka "The Big Bopper") crashed outside Clear Lake, Iowa, killing all on board. Jennings had given his seat to Richardson, who had the flu and desperately needed rest (contrary to the movie La Bamba). In his 1996 autobiography, Jennings admitted that in the years afterward, he felt severe guilt and responsibility for the crash; after Jennings gave up his seat, Holly had jokingly told Jennings, "I hope your ole bus freezes up!" Jennings shot back facetiously, "I hope your damn plane crashes!" These words would haunt him for years.

Where I belong.
I remember the day well and being absolutely shattered by the news. Buddy Holly was one of my favorite singers. Ironically, his song "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" was rising up the charts at the time. Richie Valens song, "Donna," had been at number one for weeks. Of course, today he's best remembered for the B side of that record, "La Bamba."

Buddy Holly was one of the 2 or 3 most important people in the history of rock and roll. If you don't believe that just ask any of the surviving Beatles, Stones or Hollies.

Simple: just contact Heather Mills attorney. He'll give you Paul's number and then you can ask Paul to introduce you to the others.

I've always preferred "Donna" over "La Bamba". I wonder if the movie (La Bamba) had anything to do with the song having since become so well known & being credited as Valens' best song? Though a very enjoyable movie, La Bamba still isn't as good as "The Buddy Holly Story" in my opinion. What an acting tour-the-force by a then unknown Gary Busey! I can watch that movie over and over again & still enjoy it like it was the first time i've seen it. As for "La Bamba", i saw once or twice, liked it...but never bothered to watch it again. The Esai Morales character (playing Richie's brother) kind of got on my nerves after a while....

My favorite Buddy Holly song? I like several of them, but they can't beat his version of "Peggy Sue". Maybe the fact my first highschool gf had the same name might have something to do with it.
