With all the Sci Fi enthusiasts and even writers around here, this thread is long overdue.

Good way to start this thread: Space date set for Scotty's ashes.

Star Trek actor James Doohan, who played the engineer Scotty in the original TV series, will now have his remains blasted into space in October. The actor's ashes were supposed to be sent into orbit last year, but the flight was delayed as tests were carried out on the rocket. Doohan died of Alzheimer's disease and pneumonia in July 2005, aged 85.

Ferengis and Klingons

Great chance to debate important topics like which hobbyist would be the ideal Ferengi or ideal Klingon? Perhaps the advantages that an SP would have if she were a shape shifter?

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry created his future cultures based on present cultures. Lots of references on the web about 1 to 1 matches between the present and past. No need to repeat here, but feel free to take a stab at it.

Note that the 1st and 2nd place of the John W. Campbell award this year were given to two Canadians. I guess we have a thing about seeking the weird.

What made Star Trek so sucesful and series like T. C. McQueen or Sea Quest not that much, I don't know. I liked them both. Mindscan by Robert Sawyer (1st place award) is just incredible! Read it over the weekend and it just made me think... again!

Star Trek was not a success originally but it developed a cult following once it hit the re-run market.I think it grew because it combined the future with travel back in time while recreating basic themes and morality plays that appealed to a wide spectrum of followers.The original characters were multi - dimensional and each had a following.

My problem with Jean-Luc Picard is that I often confuse him with the Captain Merrill Stubing of the Love Boat. Yes, Romulans were grosely misunderstood. Yes, the original characters were multi - dimensional and each had a following.... I am still following Uhura and those amazing min skirts

There is one thing I will never understand about Star Trek.

And it is this. In the 24th Century, we were able to obtain global peace on earth where everyone gets along. We can go to distant planets and go faster than the speed of light. We can terraform planets to ever meet our needs. We can understand what the hell everyone is saying without taking a damn class. There is the cure for cancer and other deadly diseases.

Yet we couldn't find a damn cure for male pattern baldness. What is up with that??????

Rick Berman and Herman Zimmerman.

Needs to get rid of these two. The reason as to why ST sucks big fat rhino nuts is because of their lack in creativity and story telling.

I stopped watching after DS9 because anything after that even movie wise is a freakin' insult to Roddenberry.

Space Above and Beyond was great! Downloaded the whole thing from torrent before the DVD came out. But my favorite is still Babylon 5. It had a fantastic 4 year story arc, the 5th year was kind of a letdown. Most interesting, and developed, alien races of any sci-fi series ever.

Berman and Zimmerman should be transported into deep space. Enterprise was just hitting it's stride and it was cancelled and they made a final episode that ranks up there with the Dallas "it was all a dream" episode for the worst tv show of all time.

Don't forget the new Battlestar Galactica. Fantastic series with the sexiest Cylon ever. Best artificial lifeform since Lexa Doig, Dromie, on Andromeda.

Oh yeah, almost forgot...favorite sci-fi novel is Dune. The mini-series was quite well done but the movie sucked.
