Where I belong.
I was calmly pedaling along Avenue des Pins last Saturday afternoon when suddenly the front end of my bike dropped some 3 inches, stopping on a dime, and sending me ass over elbows over the handlebars and onto the pavement. It seems that the front tire of my bike had rolled dead-center over a misaligned storm drain, injuring me badly enough to bleed just a little, to bruise a fair amount, to ache for a few days, but sadly not nearly badly enough to launch litigious on the wonderful city of Montreal.

Just an hour ago, I returned to the city and immediately mounted my bicycle and headed off down the bikepath, acutely aware as I rolled along, as never before, of each and every storm drain and whether or not it's properly aligned.

That is a scary fall. We are grateful that you suffered no serious injuries, things could have been much worse, a friend of mine recently broke his arm after falling off his bike. These days the streets and bikepaths in our city are no different than the ones in Port-au- Prince, so bike safely!!
I wish you a fast recovery.

It was reported on Monday. As for late Thursday, the booby trap is still in place.

Well done but did you get thru to the road works department in the arrondissement or simply left a message about the situation with the arrondissement receptionist who answers all calls? With summer vacation the replacement staff handling calls is not as efficient.

the City doesn't have time for this non-sense... those unionized workers are too busy playing poker on their piece of turf near Silo 5 in the Old Port.

Harcourt Mudd, the street weren't smoother... ppl were just smarter in the past.

Somewhere along the way a few BMX kids smashed their heads in and now we're all asked to wear helmets.

Actually, City workers used to take care to replace covers and grills properly... nowadays, they're in such a rush to jump back into their AC'ed truck they couldnt care less what direction those slots face.

And speaking of things I notice now, but didn't b4... holyshit, I'm amazed the hwy's are still standing around town with all those cracks and chunks of concrete missing.

Actually, I didn't make the call. It was made by a Francophone friend, who talked to an actual person who told him it would be done. I'll be riding by there again (very carefully) on Thursday or Friday this week. The offending storm drain, by the way, is directly opposite Mamma's Restaurant on des Pins at the corner of Sewell, in the Plateau.

(I figured that the information would likely be more accurately received in French, especially considering the Plateau location. Every official document I receive from the arrondissement at my home is unilingual.)

If it is not fixed next time you are in the area work the system from another angle. Each arrondissement is divided into three districts. Call the office of the councillor for that specific district of the Plateau and talk to the person or someone with some clout beyond the receptionist.

Also since you had a friend call previously you can call the main arrondissement office and both can call the district. Make it look like a really serious problem, which it is.

Thanks for the advice. It's actually astonishing that someone hasn't been seriously injured there. I was riding under 10 k/ph at the time and I got tossed. Someone going twice that speed would have been thrown quite a ways. It's also quite obvious that this particular drain has been that way for a long, long time.

Most riders wouldn't have the problem I did. I ride a road bike (23 mm tires.) A rider on a mountain bike or hybrid wouldn't have been sucked in.

And I agree. It is a serious problem. Someone not wearing a helmet could be killed and as well, the location, des Pins between St. Urbain and St. Laurent, is heavily traveled. The bike path out of the McGill Ghetto runs up to des Pins and Parc. Between there and where Cherrier meets St. Denis, there is no bike route at all other than the street or riding north (or west if you have a compass) up to Rachel.

Actually the problem is more serious then you describe. The lighting between St. Urbain and St. Laurent is substandard due to the shadows and des Pins is relatively narrow so swerving at the last second or being thrown is not an attractive alternative.

You can cheat a little at St. Urbain by cutting down to the little street just below des Pins, then over to Ste Dominique, up to Roy, which will get you to Lafontaine Park. Thus avoiding the traffic, buses and other nonsense on des Pins.

Actually, the problem is more serious than that. des Pins has been narrowed to one lane in each direction between (at least) St. Urbain and St. Laurent due to construction.

Nope, nowhere near that. Actually, your hotel isn't terribly far from where I went down; maybe 3-4 blocks.

We went north (west if you're using a compass) up Christophe-Colomb and Boyer to the top of the island. Then through the Parc Nature Ile-de-la-Visitation. The cafe is just off the park. And then we went back the way we came.

I'm now fully recovered from both that and a serious case of saddle soreness I picked up this last weekend as well.

I'm thinking of doing a week of riding around Holland in September or October with a side trip to Planet Happy Garden or Villa Vertigo. Interested?

Things I notice now that I didn't before:
LV logos on handbags.
Fake orgasms.
Real cream vs. coolwhip.
A lying mechanic.
Fake smiles vs. real ones.
Fake titties...okay I never DIDN'T notice those
Obscenely long, bushy uncut eyebrow hair on men.
My neighbour's uncut grass...
