F1 racing legend Michael Schumacher in critical condition following skiing accident

LYON, FRANCE - Retired seven-times Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is in 'critical' condition following a fall while skiing off-piste in the French Alps resort of Meribel, Sky Sports News reported on Sunday.

The 44-year-old German was taken to hospital in Grenoble and placed under the care of Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spine injury expert.

Schumacher was transferred to a better-equipped medical unit in Grenoble for further examinations and an FIA source said he had been placed under the care of Professor Gerard Saillant, a brain and spine injury expert.

Saillant is a close friend of Schumacher's and his former Ferrari team chief Jean Todt, who is now President of the FIA.

Le Dauphine Libere newspaper reported on its website that Schumacher's condition had worsened and that his life was now endangered. It did not disclose its sources.

Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm was unable to give any further information about his condition but confirmed he was on a private ski trip and had not been alone.

Gernigon-Lecomte said Schumacher, who has a vacation home in Meribel, had been skiing off piste.

"He fell around 11:00 am and hit a rock with his head," he added.

"It seems that he has suffered a head trauma, but I would not say how serious it is. He was conscious but very agitated while being taken to hospital."

Schumacher, whose birthday is on Jan. 3, is the most successful Formula One driver of all time with a record 91 victories among his achievements. He won his titles with Benetton and Ferrari.

He left the sport last year after a three-year comeback with Mercedes following an earlier retirement from Ferrari at the end of 2006. The German lives in Switzerland with his wife and two children.

Fake priest foiled trying to enter Michael Schumacher's hospital room

While Formula One legend Michael Schumacher fights for his life in a French hospital, a report has surfaced of a person dressed as a priest tried to enter his room on Tuesday.

"There have been several interesting incidents here at the hospital," Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm told reporters in Grenoble, France, where he is being treated for a head injury suffered while skiing off-piste Sunday.

"There apparently was a person dressed-up as a priest, who tried to get near Michael," she added. "I am asking everyone to let the doctors work and leave the family spend peaceful time with Michael."

The person was escorted off the premises and a rumour circulated that it was in fact a journalist.

"It's what I was told...," Kehm responded. "We have clearly noted that people are trying to get beyond the press room here in the clinic. It's revolting, in my opinion."

Schumacher fell into a coma after hitting his head on a rock while skiing with his son in the resort town of Meribel.

He showed some improvement Tuesday following a second operation to remove bleeding from his brain, but still remains in a critical state.

Schumacher is a seven-time F1 World Champion, winning 91 races during his 18 year career. He retired following the 2012 race season.

I was in Europe when this happened...

Michael had many good day in Montreal, winning 7 times @ Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

The coma that he is in, is a medically induced coma to slow down bruising/swelling of the brain

He was awake when loaded into the ambulance, but had involuntary limb movement, and was very agitated

It seemed that were the first signs of cerebral injury....

He was with his 14 year old son, when he hit his head on a rock

I am sure it wasn't a full helmet though...

I hope he gets better soon

    Best Regards

I heard that there was some brain damage. It was a severe head injury.

According to reports he is able to breath without assistance. His speech is limited, and his movement limited. ( This would be normal for someone in a coma for so long as the muscles would atrophy due to non use.) Rehab can take many months, and this is assuming no permanent brain damage. The extent of any brain damage is still uncertain, he is in for a long haul, and hopefully will recover the majority of his mobility and mental capacity.
