You may remember that Chris Nilan was the "tough guy" on the 1986 team. Some years later I recall him giving a "mea culpa" interview in which he said he was ashamed of his fighting in hockey. It was on one of the mainstream TV stations. He is an American from Boston. All time American record holder in NHL penalty minutes. There is a movie about him called "The Last Gladiators", by Alex Gibney who also did the excellent documentary film on Eliot Spitzer called Client Number 9.

Around the corner
I still remember a much better enforcer than Nilan.
I never saw him lose a fight No 22 , John Ferguson.
I will never forget his fight with Boston enforcer Ted Green that was replayed for years.
Ferguson was not a big guy but he was so stable on the ice and he was a former boxer who knew how to use his fists.

I think those times are gone, while it was entertaining, I prefer hockey for the skills players have not their fighting ability.

By the way, Nilan holds 3 impressive NHL records: most penalty minutes in one playoffs (141), most penalty minutes per game (4.42), and most penalties in one game (10, while playing with the Bruins against the Whalers). He was impressively consistent with the toughness and did win his share of fights and all of them in the game I saw against the Whalers.

Bon!

Vraiment bon! Lol!

Nilan was a product of Southy! Great guy, I met him at a boxing gala event at the Four Seasons!
The "Brawl in the Hall" was my all time favorite!...I wished that Nilan on his way to the hallway could have beaten the crap out of the "rat" and "schmuck" Linseman who like the rat and pussy he always was all he was capable of doing was to scratch Nilan in the face and run away somewhere in the catacombs of the Garden or run and hide in the garbage dumps outside the Garden near the tracks with the rest of the rats!!!

Nilan vs Miller ...two good 'ol boys from Beantown!

Sharkman,

Here is a very honest interview given by Chris Nilan in 2014 which he did while promoting his book, "Fighting Back." In this interview Nilan talks about getting sober and the difficulty of his job as Habs' "enforcer":

Sharkman,

The Strombo interview was great because Strombo got Nilan to talk about his personal interactions with Whitey Bulgur. Nilan asking Whitey why he had to have his gun out during their conversation was classic! Keep in mind Bulgur was still a fugitive from justice at the time of that interview. I think you don't like Strombo because he is a Vegan. As far as I know Strombo is as big a Habs fan as anyone in this thread.

See the below- Ferguson vs. Nesterenko, April 27, 1965. Ferguson with a quick first round KO in this one, but what I do not like is that Nesterenko falls to the ice a bloody mess (you can see his blood splatter on the ice in this video), but Ferguson keeps hitting him, savagely. Now can you imagine if this happened now? Ferguson would be suspended for the season if not life, had this happened in today's sissified NHL:

En effet! J'ai adoré Toffoli cette année, mais si il pouvait nous la mettre dedans ce soir......et pourquoi pas un MSOGWS..........

Je m'engage à construire un petit altar en son honneur si il nous donne la victoire. On a besoin de ses mains!

On ne donnait pas très cher de leur peau pour le 5e match, et on connait le résultat.....alors pour ce soir, à Mtl devant des partisans, l'improbable est toujours possible.

Go Habs!

Growing up a hockey fanatic in Montreal there were 2 certainties: you were either a Habs fan or a Bruins fan! I was both of these which created a lot of fights amongst my entourage!!!
But the one thing we all had in common and that you could take to bank was that we "ALL HATED THE FUCKIN' LEAFS!"
