On the subject of store bought, cold smoked salmons, apart from the usual suspect local Jewish delis (in Montreal, Snowdon's is one), which usually have pretty good smoked salmon but at very high prices, I have found this smoked salmon in Fresh Market to be the best of the store bought salmons on the market, IMHO. I get 4 ounces for $11.99, so basically $48 per pound. It's a little bit oily but very tasty and I have it on salads and with bagels of course:

Just tried at Neotokyo, their Mazemen (brothless ramen) and the crème de bacon (bacon cream?) one. Basically a ramen carbonara

Taste was ok but portion is so small I am starving!! Then expensive for such portion.

Happy mid autumn festival!

If lately if you have wander around the Asian supermarkets you might have noticed the humongous quantity of colorful paper bag. Around the world and especially in Asia the mid autumn festival is celebrated. In some countries it's a celebration of the harvest back in the old days.

It's an important festival where families gather to celebrate and it's marked by a full moon (if you look outside you could see it).

As gift offering is a sign of respect and politeness, those bags are here to be offered (along the moon cakes) to the receiving family or friends.
And now the moon cake! I will just introduce the Cantonese style (Hong Kong) which a (sweet) lotus seed paste with often 2 egg yolk:

It's often eaten with a nice hot tea and sometimes people will gather outdoor to enjoy the round and full moon.
In Hong Kong other variations have erupted but throughout Asia each countries have their own version of mooncakes as well.

You can get in any Asian supermarkets like Kim phat, Ocean plus, C&T, Fu Tai but the biggest one is T&T.
The tin box are very nice (in line with the tradition of gifts). In the old days, kids would use them in the park, melt candles and pour water on it ... But it's too dangerous and nowadays it's forbidden lol
