I had to do some other reading before I discovered conservatives were freaking out about it. It's a cold fact that the Founding Fathers' rhetoric on liberty didn't apply to black people at the country's inception. And it's also a fact that slaves were instrumental in the early country's infrastructure. I won't be surprised if Trump doesn't know his current living quarters was built by slaves. So I'm still trying to understand the conservative opposition. Is it because Republicans have done a 180 on trying to remedy issues related to the end of slavery, like civil and voting rights? Is it because they view the 1619 Project as an attempt to keep the topic of reparations in the foreground? Maybe someone here who agrees with the likes of Newt Gingrich can shed some light.
