I was about to say that in reality, almost every team in the NHL is in the same boat. But i saw that you put the number at four. Who are those 4 teams?

The salary cap is expected to be in the $47-$49M range. The 4 teams with the most cap room to play with in the FA period are Colorado, LA, Flyers and Habs.

Let's keep our fingers crossed. Maybe the Canadiens will use that $$$ to score big in the free agent sweepstakes...just like they did in 2006 with Samsonov. (Sorry Pablo.)

Luongo is a great goalie and always has been. As for Linden he's not what he used to be but at his age you still have to give him credit. Guys like Linden, Sundin, Gary Roberts and a few others should be in rocking chairs, not playing hockey. Christ they're almost as old as Techman so you've gotta give them credit just for getting out of bed in the morning.

Of course the greatest of them all and in a class of his own was Gordie Howe, who played until he was 52 - and played damn well even then!

Plante was one of the 3 or 4 greatest goaltenders ever and may even have been the best (really impossible to judge- Plante, Sawchuk, Hall, Hasek, Durnan and a few others come to mind but for me I'd say it's between Plante and Sawchuk). Plante's last NHL season was with Boston at the age of 44 but he played in the WHA with Edmonton until he was 46. Like all the greatest goaltenders he was a little strange but I always liked, admired and respected the guy.

I 've read somewhere that Chelios has a son in the minors and that he'd like to imitate Gordie Howe and play with him in the NHL.

Gary Roberts is a hell of an example for those lazy overpaid prima-donnas polluting the NHL.The guy is 40+,plays every shift like his life depends on it,he hits,he still fights and scores timely goals.
He's not the reason the Pens were eliminated.Aperently the Sens wanted him,but ex-coach Jacques Martin didn't want to send him to the team that fired him,so in the end they settled for Mike Comrie.

I don't know about everyone else but I'm enjoying the playoffs. It's a treat to watch a game where it looks like both teams are trying to win, as opposed to the final game of the season between the Leafs and Habs where it looked like both teams were trying to lose.

It's also fun to watch quality hockey, something Montreal and Toronto fans can only do if there's a good team visiting (and then it's like men playing against boys, considering how woeful the Leafs and Habs are).

It's time for a 2 tiered NHL with the top tier for the quality teams and the bottom one for untalented riffraff like Mtl. and Toronto (plus of course Philly, Boston and the rest of the crap masquerading as NHL calibre teams).

joelcairo,

I am not as big a hockey fan or as astute observer as you and Picasso and some others, but based on what I have seen, I agree with you. I note that even the Rangers-Sabres series, although it ended in 6 games, was very close and exciting.

Right now, it looks to me like any of the remaining 4 teams are capable of getting hot and winning the Stanley Cup.

You could state the same thing about most professional sports. For example, how many baseball teams really have a chance of making it to the World Series? How many have never made it to the post season? I'm sure they have much worse a record than the NHL does when it comes to low quality teams.

Don't look for logic here, joelcairo only posts to bash the Leafs and the Habs. Same tired ol' routine...

Ok, it's going to be Ottawa VS Detroit for the cup and Ottawa will win it and that's the bottom line, cause I said so.

Oh Bobby, poor Bobby, why am I not surprised to see your zero-content riposte? (Sorry, but I'm hoping that you have a dictionary.) Have you heard the one about the pot calling the kettle black?

Here's an idea, if you don't want to be called upon when you keep making the same infantile, moronic comments over and over again, stop making them.

Here, let me summarize your contribution to this thread: The Habs and the Leafs SUCK. We get it ok?

I'm impressed Bobby: you've finally admitted the obvious. P.S.: I hope you did check the dictionary. If so, congratulations on 2 achievements in one day. Peace.

For those who's interested, it's 2-0 Ottawa with the series shifting back to Ottawa for 2 games. Even if the Sabers manage to split the games in Ottawa, the Sens will still be ahead 3-1. Let's go Sens.

I envision an Anaheim/Ottawa final with Anaheim winning the SC.

Hey BDC,

Posted on 4-20-07. Still on track :D . I've been watching the Sens in their playoffs run and I'm impressed by their defense, especially Schubert, Volchenkov (sp?) and Phillips, more than anything. This is unlike their teams of years past, good offense but a bunch of sissies on defense. Now, they've got a bunch of bruisers on their blue line who have the speed to match up with the smaller Sabres forwards. I still think Anaheim will prevail when all is said and done.

Hay picasso, I was watching the game last night and you are so right about the Sens. I'm not sure of the exact stat, but Ottawa lost something like only 9 games since the beging of Febuary and have the best record since that time in the NHL. I had a good idea that they would go far this season when they started making their run up the standings. Usually they epelled most of their energy during the regular season to grab top spot and faze out in the playoffs, but this year they seem to conserve their energy for the post season.

As for Anahime you may be right, but we will have to see. It would be interesting if Anahime and Ottawa met for the cup considering neather has won it before, but I'll cheer for the Sens as I want to see the cup come back to Canada and Ottawa is one of my favorit teams along with Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Calgary, Detroit and the NY Rangers.

Enjoy the playoffs.:D

Ducks are the SC Champs

The Ducks were the best team in the NHL this season and they are deservedly the SC champs. At the start of the playoffs, I thought they were the complete team, played the kind of physical hockey that it takes to shut down opponents and I had picked them to win it all. They beat the best goalie in Luongo, beat the Red Wings, the top seed in the tough and talented Western Conference and did a demolition job in the SC against Ottawa. I thought the Conn Smyth should have gone to either Andy McDonald or JS Giguere rather than Niedemayer. Hats off to the Anaheim Ducks.

P.S. to Bob Gainey: you need to get rid of the dead wood this offseason and build a team with an identity similar to the Ducks.

So, which Canadian team will lose the Stanley Cup next year?
We've gone through the small market teams the past 3 years.
Maybe it's Toronto or Vancouver's turn.

It sure as hell won't be Montreal or Toronto. Neither is even close to being good enough to get to the final, as even Pablo probably realizes by now. And to make matters even more comical Montreal recently committed to paying Markov almost 6 million a year for the next several years. The guy's not bad but to pay him superstar money is freakin ridiculous and just one more reason why the Habs will continue their losing ways.

Bravo to the Ducks, the Sens, the Wings and all the other good teams that still create some interest in hockey.
