Ellsbury deal was Tampa/Levine and Hal, not Cashman. 100% and so was the Chapman signing this past offseason. I am not that perturbed by the Chapman deal because he is a premium relief pitcher, but some of that money could be used to sign Darvish. I agree with you that Darvish would be a nice addition for the Yankees next year but many teams will be after him and we will get a huge contract. He is a tremendous talent although the other night Tanaka actually outpitched him in 0-0 duel lasting one more inning. The Battle of the Japanese stars was a draw but the Yankees did end up winning that game.

no prob on the chapman deal either im happy he said he wanted back in and did. he is a baller, and betances gives me the robertson feeling when in the pure closer role.

glad he was grabbed in the first place when he was a hot potato in the league due to his spouse abuse thing.
d if
btw i always liked Robertson (as a setup guy), but for saving some cash, cashman or whoever it ultimately was, did the right move in letting him walk since we had enough emerging depth to not feel his loss.

yes, tanaka manned up against darvish, tanaka got pride. but lets see how he does in his followup start. doesnt matter what he did if he tanks next start cuz that suggests he gave up everythin just to look good versus Darvish.

Bullshit. He's won 1 championship in 20 years at the helm and did that with a core 5 (add Bernie Williams) developed by his predecessor to which he added half a billion dollars worth of free agents (Sabathia, Teixeira, and Burnett.) Without that half billion, he'd be 20 years and zero championships.

Who's better?

Let's start with Theo Epstein, who took two teams who'd gone a combined two centuries without winning. He won in his third year with the Red Sox and his fifth with the Cubs.

Let's continue with three time champion Brian Sabean of the Giants, Walt Jocketty, whose Cardinal teams won twice with low budgets. To the mix we can add Andrew Friedman who kept the Tampa Rays in contention for almost a full decade with no money. Let's kick in Dave Dombrowski who won a championship with the Florida Marlins in their fifth year of existence. Let's add the current GM of the Cardinals, John Mozeliak, who keeps his mid-budget team in the hunt, year after year. Jon Daniels of Texas, another perennial contender without a lot of dough. Can't ignore the body of work of Billy Beane of Oakland. There's Dayton Moore who recently won a championship with the low budget, small market Kansas City Royals.

Right off the top of my head, there's nine.

Releasing Johnny "who?" Barbato was a work of genius? That statement all by itself proves my point.

Rumples makes good points. I also cannot fathom Cashman as being a top 3 GM. With the kind of money that the Yankees have been throwing at ballplayers since the mid-70's, i think i could do as good of a job as Cashman has done. Sure, the Yankees have finally developed a few very good prospects over the past few years, but the scouts also deserve credit for this and of course it's quite possible they got lucky.

I'm not saying that Cashman is a bad GM. What i'm saying is that half the GMs in the league are as good if not better than he is.

Blame Obama and Hillary Clinton for this! They're the ones responsible!

Obama and Hillary are also responsible for the torpedo that sank the sinking SS Bombers last night. They've now lost five games to the worst team in the American League in the last two weeks. (The As were the worst team in the league when the hapless "Bombers" came into town a couple of weeks back. They were not the worst team in the league when the "Bombers" left four days later. The White Sox, the same White Sox who took Dellin Betances down just last night are the current worst team in the league.)

The Red Sox have been busted stealing signs from the Yankees using Apple Watches. Brian Cashman filed a complaint and MLB has corroborated:

I never thought i'd ever say this but now i'm actually hoping the Yankees overtake the cheating Red Sucks and win the AL East pennant. Sad!

Congratulations to Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees for tying Mark McGwire's Major League Baseball rookie record of 49 home runs. Judge needs 1 more to own the new MLB record of 50, and has 6.5 games to get that homer.

Aren't you going to gloat a little about the Yankees? Have a day Didi Gregorius and CC Sabathia striking out 9? I thought their goose was cooked when I saw 37 Y.0. Sabathia starting.

My co Yankees MVPs of the postseason so far are Tanaka and Gregorious. David Robertson, who has been phenomenal in the bullpen, finished third in my personal balloting.

Hungry, CC may be 37 but he had his best statistical season since 2012. He developed a cut fastball under the tutelage of his good buddy Andy Pettite, who was a very crafty lefthanded pitcher. More importantly, he got a new knee brace and managed to stay healthy with only one or two short DL stints when he missed a start or two. If you watch CC regularly this year, he completely neutralizes lefthanded hitters with his slider. The Kipnis 3 pitch strikeout last night was a good example. However CC is not the horse capable of 7 innings or better every time out like he was in 2009. The good news is that with the historically deep bullpen the Yankees have in which an All Star pitcher this year (Betances) is currently 5th in the pecking order, CC doesn't need to go deep.

The Yankees bullpen is the deepest they have ever had, including in the late 1990s when they had a core of Mariano Rivera, Jeff Nelson, Mike Stanton, Ramiro Mendoza and Graeme Lloyd. The main difference with the current bullpen is they all throw harder and nasty vicious sliders, which is why Sanchez led the AL in passed balls this year. Sanchez also has a bad habit of stabbing at sliders with his glove sideways, which is bad blocking technique. A catcher blocking a vicious slider has to show the ball the entire face of the mitt. If it's sideways there is less glove to block ball. I think this will be fixed. He only does it with wild sliders on his right side, or those used on the outside against righties by guys like Gray, Tanaka, and Robertson, who all throw nasty shit off the plate.

I think the deep bullpen is the ticket these days. The Yankees have it and Cleveland's pen is no slouch and that took them to the dance last year. KC had when they won it all. I remember with KC that you had beeter be leading by the 6th inning because after that they took out their usually good starting pitcher and brought in an even better 7th inning guy followed by a even better then that set-up man and finally the closer.

The Tigers had some good teams but we had starters that could go deep and a very poor pen. We never had the pen to go along with the starters. This year the Tiger's had the ex-Yankee Greene as our set-up guy and J. Wilson as our closer (until the trade Dead Line when J. Wilson was dealt to the Cubs and Greene was made the closer). If you have 3-5 guys like those two...now your talking. I'd take Betances. He's just in a bit of a funk at the wrong time.

Betances has had several funks this year. He is prone to bursts of mechanical problems and control issues due to his size, but when he is on, and has his command, he is the most unhittable guy they have in the bullpen, with closer stuff. They have not trusted him in the closer situation because he seems to have trouble with men on base and can be wild. He definitely has high end closer stuff, but not the consistent command you like to see from your #1 bullpen horse.

Maddon does push envelopes with his relievers. He seems to have jumped on the bandwagon of muling the best relief pitchers during the playoffs. Some guys handle 2-3 inning stints better than others do, We saw Maddon abuse Chapman last year. Girardi has at times overused guys he trusts as well.

The Cubs' win over the Nationals in 5 games was impressive. I didn't know if their pitching would hold up. I will be interested to see what happens with them against the Dodgers.

Well, the Yankees were, in the end, man-handled by two of the best young stars in the game. Just how good are these two, historically? I put the question to some friends, asked for suggestions, and then did a bit of research. The numbers below are combined WAR (from B-R), the best three years of each pair. Note that Correa and Altuve appear twice. I've adjusted their figure supposing a) that Correa had started 2015 with Houston rather than in the minors and b) that Correa hadn't missed 50 games this year with an injury.

Considering their ages, these two could be the best 2b-SS combination in the long history of the game.

Reese-Robinson 42.8
Concepcion-Morgan 42
Correa-Altuve adjusted 41.8
Turner-Lajoie 40.3
Barry-Collins 40
Rogell-Gehringer 38.7
Wagner-Ritchey 38.7
Correa-Altuve 36.7
Trammell-Whitaker 32
Rodriguez-Young 30.8
Cronin-Myer 30.5
Tinker-Evers 30.2
Vizquel-Alomar 30.1
Jennings-Reitz 28.7
Jeter-Cano 27.6
Yount Molitor 27.3
Stephens-Doerr 26.8

Well, the Yankees were, in the end, man-handled by two of the best young stars in the game.

Although Altuve and Correa are great players, that is not what happened on this play. Had Didi Gregorious not been obstructed and gotten off his usual rifled relay throw, Altuve is out at the plate. Had Sanchez fielded the ball cleanly, Altuve is out at that plate. The Astros took a bit of a gamble and it worked out for them. More often than not this year, the Yankees have executed on those kinds of plays and cut down reckless baserunners trying to take an extra base on them. The OF has 3 good arms and Didi usually does a great job with relay throws when he is not obstructed.

In my balloting I gave Judge the MVP by a nose over Altuve, this because Judge defeated Altuve in the all important OBP stat, not to mention smothering him in all power stats.
