I played college basketball. I know how you feel. but being a Canadian citizen in Montreal, basketball is a minority interest. It sucks but that's life. You can not expect 3 million hockey fans to care about an U.S College game, it's just not in the culture. They will know about the Quebec junior hockey players before they know who Omeka from UConn. Besides, the stupid CRTC is controlling the content of the TV up here, we don't get ESPN, HBO, and the specialty channels in Canadian satelite. Just the way it is. If you go to Japan, they will have Sumo or Japan Pacific or central league baseball in the bars before they show the mid-night madness. Don't come to montreal if you want to catch a game in the bars, stay in the U.S then.
The only way to get all those college games and espn stuff is through illegal satellite dishes if you are in Canada. simple as that. My point about Champs is that if you do have more than a few of you go into the place, they may have the merci of turn on one TV for the NBA game or if they have their pirated Direct TV working they would give you college nights on ESPN2. It's your best bet but it still no gaurentees. If you see a guy in Lakers gear next time during hockey playoffs at Champs with a few people watching the NBA playoffs on a small TV, that's me and my buds.

Boxterturbo,

There is a Canadian player on the UConn team, Denham Brown. Brown played on the Canadian national team. The fans in Montreal should support Denham. He was the starting small forward for most of last season at UConn before developing knee tendinitis which reduced his effectiveness. He is back this year for his junior season and should be a key contributor on the UConn team.

He's not from Quebec. Again... people in Quebec do not care much about basketball. Kills me too... but that's how it is.

Yeah, Denham is from the Toronto area, but a Canadian is a Canadian and he should be supported as such. Furthermore, Denham when healthy can really hit the 3 point shot and he plays good defense, only thing is he tends to talk some trash, and took some unnecessary technical fouls last year for trash talking.

... are you sure you hobby in MTL ? You don't talk to many locals when you do or watch to much TV do you ?

Canadians are Candians, that part is true for all other provinces but Quebec.

Quebec residents are "Quebecois" 1st and formost then Canadian 2nd. That's the way most french speaking Quebecers (is that how you write it?) see themselves, and I do put the emphasis on french speaking. They don't identify with Canadian anglo professional athletes or stars.

Agree with EB, any Canadian playing in USA at that level must be supported!
Quebecers are no exception!
MG I believe you are at fault with the above assertion!
It's ridiculous!

What are you talking about ? I'm not at fault with anything ! It is a fact, a reality ! How would you know otherwise ???

Any MTLer will tell you the same thing I just did. I wasn't saying that it was right or wrong, I was stating a fact.

I live in the "Montreal" where soccer, football, basketball and hockey are being played and are very popular!
Baseball has faded away as a summer sport but is still being watched!
It's the "Montreal" with rich and poor, with wasp, african american and frog!
It's my "Montreal"!
The only one I know and the one in which EB or any other visitor would be at ease!

SL,

I have personally observed on St. Catherine Street many young males wearing basketball jerseys of NBA and NCAA college teams. I am sure these guys play hoops somewhere too, probably in indoor courts because the weather gets cool in Montreal so fast. So you should get off Lawless's back.

EB:

Many of these 'young males wearing basketball jerseys' that you saw on Ste-Catherine street are gangbangers. Gangbangers wear these jerseys. I'd say that the majority of them have never stepped on a basketball court in their entire lives.

Lawless you are not answering the question. I did not make any assertion on how "other" sports are doing in MTL and the ethnic mix in MTL or any of that !

I simply made a statement that most of french speaking Quebecers see themselves as Quebecers 1st and Canadians 2nd and that they don't identify with a Basketball player from Ontario who now plays in the USA.

Where am I wrong in this assertion ?!
