I will probably attend the next GT.

Whoever is organizing it hopefully will be able to get a couple of agencies to show since as soon as the we have some commitment from agencies we know that more guys will show.

There are people in Quebec who celebrate Canada day??? I thought everyone was moving on that day, just to make an anti-Canada statement.

Actually, that was a prime motivating reason why the Quebec government harmonized the expiry date of leases on that date.

GT sounds good to me, its been almost a year since Porter was nice
enough to organize this activity. Thanks to Shijak and whomever is
involved in planning this one.

As to your misconceptions on why June 30th is moving day for most in Québec.

Yup! No political or legal reason behind the July 1st move in these days and ages! Some landlord even offer bonus to those who agree to move on a different date, in order to avoid traffic jams at elevators.

But the custom is hard to change, for a very practical reason: if your lease end July 1st, this mean you will likely not move before so, your apartment won't be available before July 1st. Since there's a huge proportion of peoples in this situation, there's not many apartments available before July 1st, meaning lots of peoples won't have a place to live if they move before July 1st.

The remedy is long term and the situation will shift slowly, by renters dying and freeing apartments sooner, renters moving to a newly-build home/appartment, obviously not guided by the Jul... Because of the huge base of rented appartment in Montréal and the relative old ages of these apartments, with peoples sometimes living in them since 25 years, the change will be slower in Montréal.

Used to be May 1st but was changed since it disrupted the school year for kids. July 1 st is handy since the school year is over, it is within a few weeks of the construction holiday so the finishing touches of moving may be spread out over time.

Strangely enough, even if I'm an old member of this board (since 2004) I never attended a GT in Montreal. However, I went to several GT in São Paulo with a Brazilian board. The Montreal GT format seems to be a little bit different but I'm sure it can still be fun.

This year, as I'm a new widower, I intend a comeback on the Montreal scene and I guess that a GT is a place to see de visu local talents. I'll probably drop by that evening.
