Yes, there is a thread on restaurants in Montreal, but..............

I think that a thread asking for the best in each catagory will allow us to see the restarants that are the most popular. This way you can get a more specific view. In the pizza thread there were quite a few more suggestions for pizza than in the general restaurant thread.

I have eaten at a number of Chinese restaurants in Montreal and the best I have experienced is Le Orchidee de Chine.

Ruby Rouge is certainly a very good dim sum provider, perhaps the best in Montreal and certainly comparable to good dim sum I have had in New York City. The best dim sum I have ever had was in San Francisco (Ton Kiang), but certainly Ruby Rouge would hold its own in a competition with some of the better dim sum restaurants in major US cities. I think that they do need to improve their variety a bit.

The best dim sum in Montreal is actually in the south shore. Foo Wor in Brossard. But that's not in your hotel touring guide is it?

VIP was my place but one of the chef and a few waiters went to a new place called NEW DYNASTY a few years back just across the street on clarck next to rene lesveque bvd.

Their won ton soup is amazing with the shrimps. Not the usual kleenex that you find at most places.

The best won ton soup is made with shrimp, and if it is made with shrimp it has to be made and cooked as you order it. Not like the "buffet" won ton soup that has no shrimp in it and has been sitting for several hours in soup before it is heated up and put on to the buffet tables. The "made to order" won ton soup is also made with a thinner noodle, the buffet table ones are made with a noodle 3 or 4 time thicker so that it would not fall apart so that it can be served over a longer period of time.

Clay pot rice

If you are the adventurous type, you may want to try this one.

The dish I have is called "clay pot rice" - it is prepared by putting the raw rice and ingredients (varies depending on what you order) in a clay pot and cook together in a charcoal stove from start to finish. The point to let the rice absorbs the juice of the ingredients as they are cooked, sometimes, they offer seasoned soy sauce to give the cooked rice an extra kick if the ingredients are too bland. The rice is served in pot that it was cooked in. This dish is very popular both in Hongcouver and Toronto, but I couldn't find any restaurant that serves it in NYC Chinatown, however, I did happen to find 1 here in Montreal.

Bewarn the restaurant is a hole in the wall, I mean literally, and it's very small. You can order it togo if you don't like the ambiance (what ambiance? LOL). The restaurant is called Zhong Cheng Conges & noodles, 14 Rue De LaGauchetiere, east of St Catherine in the heart of Chinatown. It takes about 25 to 30 mins to prepare, so if you don't want to wait, you can call to order if you speak Chinese (the owners don't speak French OR English) OR do what I do, go there, order it then walk around the area for 20 so minutes (or get yourself a bubble tea - me being an caffeine addict, my fav is HK Style Coffee and Tea combo) and return for the food. 1 more thing, I am not sure they listed this dish on the menu, but it is posted on the wall. If you are interested, pm me and I will take a picture of the menu on the wall next time I go - it can be confusing since there are a lot of other dishes posted on the wall.

Cheers,
MF
