I found out years ago that July 1st is 'moving day' for many Mtl'ers, so that's probably why not as many sps work on that day. Something about rents expiring on June 30th.
Good catch Doc! July 1st Annually Moving Day (all QC leases expire June 30th). That's usually around the time of the Jazz Festival weeks.

Don't take the BS at the border personally. It happens to us too. Our immigration guys are one notch up from mall cops. They're just doing their jobs... whatever that is.
Note first, that the first 11 posts in this thread are four years old.

The big difference at the border is that the entry into the US is manned by the Department of Homeland Security while entry into Canada is manned by Revenue Canada. The main concern at the US border is keeping swarthy looking individuals out while the main concern at the Canadian border is making sure that Ottawa gets its percentage for your bad habits.

Well, most but not all. Mine, for example, runs Feb-Jan. Also I'm not sure if this is a Quebec thing or a Montreal thing. One thing for sure, it's by custom, not by statute.

In both weeks, hotels are pretty booked and as the escort demand increases with tourists overrunning the city, so does the supply that must feed that demand. This should be obvious.

I've been going to Montreal during the Jazz festival for years & i've never had a problem getting a room for a good price & i've seen as many sps as i've wanted to see. I've even stayed at the Hyatt Regency several times right in the middle of the Jazz festival. The Hyatt is usually where the Jazz fest has its headquarters during those two weeks. Never paid more than the usual rate i pay at either PL or HW.

But the F1 weekend.....that's an entirely different ballgame & hotels are usually booked a year in advance. But if someone is willing to pay several hundreds of $$ per night for an average room, i'm sure he wouldn't have trouble finding a place to stay.

Here's some documentation i've found in regards to Quebec "Moving Day":

http://www.slaw.ca/2010/07/01/moving-day-la-journee-nationale-du-demenagement/

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fête_du_déménagement

It appears that at one point, in 1974, the Quebec government did step in to establish guidelines when rents could expire, in order to prevent people from having to move during the cold winter months. The dates of April 30th or May 1st (1975) were the ones chosen. However, leases were usually automatically extended to June 30th, and moving day being on July 1st became the custom since it made it easier for people with kids to move since the school year was now over. It appears that the large majority of Quebecers were in approval with June 30th being the date most leases would expire in order to allow them to move on July 1st. It should be noted that moving companies have to be booked well in advance & their prices are jacked up considerably.

Moving Day, 2007

Back on Moving Day in 2007, while staying at the Omni, I booked a 5 hour dinner date with Karyna of Eleganza, whom I had not met at the time. Karyna showed up on time, and my plan was to go for dinner to either Sho Dan on Metcalfe or one other place I had in mind, which I can't recall. They were both closed. I am not certain but I think it was Monday night and that may have been an issue as well. I finally settled on Zen, a Chinese restaurant which occupied the basement level of the Omni, but has since closed.

In prior and subsequent years I have always been in Montreal on Moving Day and never had a problem finding a restaurant that was open, so I am wondering whether the fact that it was a Monday may have been a factor as well.

It's insane for any restaurant to close down at any time during Jazz Festival. Montreal is brimming with tourists during Jazz Fest, and most of them are staying in hotels and want to eat out every night. Anyone who closes an eating establishment any day during Jazz festival isn't interested in making money.

As far as escorts go, most of them probably do not have much to move and allowing for traffic, the moves can be done in less than a day. I don't see any reason why most agencies or at least the ones that want to make money would not have very full staffs for each day of the Jazz Festival.

Regarding Formula One week, it is famous for bringing retired escorts out of retirement. This ie because Montreal becomes flooded with Eurodudes who come over to see the race. Many of these Eurodudes are spoiled trust fund babies who come over from Europe with $10,000 cash in their wallet (or $9,999.99, just to be safe about declaration), and that cash is burning a fucking hole in their wallet as soon as they get off their private jet. The escorts lust for these clients, although many of them are also coke sniffing fiends who behave like Charlie Sheen does after snorting a few lines. Still, these clients are viewed as cash cows that need to be milked, and every lady comes out to grab an utter.

LOL I'm the king to re-activate old threads. And it works, a thread that is 4 years with 11 posts now having almost 20 more in less than 24 hours.
Roger, you did it again. I noticed it just before I saw your first post.:)
Note first, that the first 11 posts in this thread are four years old.
I wasn't the first, though.

365 days a year!
Why wait?
2011 is the best year to come. Montreal is full of construction projects. Come see Montreal before the changes. New CHUM, new Montreal Children Hospital, new Champlain Bridge, new Mercier bridges repairs, new Dorval airport interchange, new HWY 30 section, new HWY 25 section, etc... Montreal will be totally different in 2019.
2019??? I hope I'll be back before then!:) It sounds like Montreal will be a nice place once they get it rebuilt!:D

"Moving Day" in Quebec just happens to coincide with Canada Day. Everything's pretty much closed on Canada Day since it's a national holiday, just like Independance Day (July 4th) in the States a few days later. The businesses will face stiff fines if they chose to remain open on a national holiday like Canada Day.

I didn't know businesses can be fined for being open on a National Holiday. Is it certain types of businesses? I've been in Canada on national holidays and find a lot of places open. In the U.S. it is up to the individual business.
Thanks, Doc, this is the fifth new thing I learned today.:)
