tiger,

EB could confirm, but I believe you may make an application to the US for leave of entry.
Check at the US border ...unless you already lied to them!!!

Lawless,

Law-abiding Canadian citizens who are not troublemakers and who don't have criminal records can get into the USA with no problem. Apparently, Tiger does not fit into that category. I suspect we are not getting the full story here, but a Canadian who fits into the category noted above does not have much to worry about. I pay federal taxes to have riff raff kept out of my country and if people are being denied entry, it is probably for a very good reason.

Canadians do not have a legal right to be permitted access into the USA. It is a privilege, and one that can be withheld at the pleasure of the US border authorities.

I note that the Canadian border authorities have also refused US citizens entry if they have criminal or DUI convictions. It's been discussed extensively in prior threads.

In the past 25 year I have no crimal record they saw that, I was going to cuba . And I told them the truth about my pasted. They where just giving me a hard time they have no morals.THEY SAID i DID SOMETHING 10 YEARS AGO i HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPEN AND THEY WOULDN'T TELL IF I KNEW I WOULD OF TOLD THEM. [BUT WHY DIDN'T THEY TELL ME] I COULD OF GONE IN TO THE US BUT SOME ARTICALE IN THERE 5000 PAGES OF RULES . I had no problems before what's there problem. But they let drug runners in give crack cocane to little kids and they live a very short lives. I think they should go after the people who are real threat. Also you have no right to say anything about me because you do not know me. [NO INFOMATION PERIOD]

Did you drive your car to the side of the road before you passed out? Did you tell the Canadian court that convicted you that you weren't driving?

You don't remember being prosecuted by your government?

It could be a little thing speeding ticket? .

No, little things like speeding tickets are ignored, assuming the offender was not also charged with reckless driving.

Having a criminal record will cause the refusal. It has nothing to do with the agents being women or men, and nothing to do with going to Cuba.

It is unlikely that you will be returning. I'm about the last person to defend Bush, but here's two things to think about:

1) During the Clinton years, if the agents determined you had a criminal record, you would also be denied entry.

2) An American will be denied entry by Canadian Immigration, if they discover a conviction for DUI, even if it was 25 years ago.

Sorry you didn't get in, but your anger is misdirected. Realize that you made a mistake in the past, clean up your record, and move on.

Tiger,

Had you gone to the US consulate in Canada and requested a waiver (which is what I think Lawless referred to) you would have saved yourself a lot of time and either gotten the waiver or been rejected. Apparently, you did not have the foresight to do that. The issue of waivers being obtained from the US or Canadian consulates has previously been discussed extensively on this Board.

If you were "going to Cuba" then you were probably turned back for flat stupidity in not knowing the US policy in that regard. That is totally on you.

From what you have posted it sounds like you are a bit of a troublemaker. In any event your lack of tact in your posts probably also manifested itself in your communications with the Border Guards. You have no God given right to get into the USA. From the limited information I have read (which is vaguely and amorphously communicated) it sounds like there was cause to keep you out. If you stay in Canada and behave and then get a waiver from the US consulate (you may have to pay for it) and act more respectfully at the Border, maybe just maybe they will let you in. But they sure as hell won't let you in "to go to Cuba."

I would be willing to bet dollars to donuts that the same ATTITUDE that is reflected in Tiger's posts got him turned back at the border. There are some people who don't get how to act in these situations - they never have and they never will. Tiger is unable to articulate the explanation he received for why he was turned back at the Border. Never heard of someone unable to do this.

In fairness to Tiger, it may be that he is French Canadian with poor English communication skills under pressure. If so he should have had a better communicator with him.

SL,

What Tiger said is that he went to the USA "to go to Cuba." God only knows what the guy said to the border authorities that got him turned back.

SL,

You are correct, but as I am sure you know one must have the temperament and the communication skills in WHATEVER language is being spoken to convey what needs to be conveyed. Tiger's posts here are very vague and obtuse and also disrespectful, so the message I am getting is that he was probably also vague and obtuse and disrespectful to the border guards.

Tiger,

What have I said here that amounts to culture bashing? Nothing. I merely said you may not have communicated effectively. Whether in English or in French one must be an effective communicator and my sense from your posts is that your communication skills may have left something to be desired.

If only I knew...
But no matter what you say Tiger, keep the CAPS LOCK OFF!!!!
Also try to read yourself back before hitting the "send" button. Read yourself as if you were somebody else who had no idea what Tiger was talking about. Sometimes you'll realize it's pretty hard to follow.
Just trying to help!

SL,

There is a difference between what you call an "unnecessary attack" and what I would call "blunt honesty." Hopefully Tiger has learned something from his experience at the border and how he has conveyed that experience. I am taking the totality of the posts he has made in coming to the conclusion that I came to. Obviously, unless one of us was a fly on the wall, we'll never know 100% what happened between Tiger and those US border guards. And I am sure that if they posted in this thread, we would hear a different story on ole Tiger and that should be kept in mind as well. There are always three versions, Tiger's side, the US border's guards side, and the truth. I still don't even know what Tiger's side is, after reading his posts in this thread.
