Flying into Montreal from the states, what are the rules with buying duty free liquor at the Montreal Trudeau airport? Im guessing I'd have to look for the duty free store 'before' heading towards customs...

Im asking about if its possible to buy duty free liquor at the montreal airport upon landing from the states...to drink while im in montreal.

I know when flying into germany, the airline is allowed to sell bottles of liquor since they are in flying over international waters.

You need to buy Duty Free in the country from which you are departing so you would have to buy at the duty free shop in the States.

When you buy Duty Free at the airport, you don't even take possession of the items until you are at the Gate (seconds before boarding the plane). Someone from the DF shop brings them to the Gate and hands it to you after they take your boarding pass.

If it weren't that way, everyone would be buying their booze at the airport.

You can only buy at the duty free upon leaving the country on an international flight. You must show your boarding pass when you make your purchase.
You cannot arrive in Montreal and buy at the Montreal dutyfree.

Is there something special that you want, that you need to work this in a backwards impossible way?

However on many international flights you can buy duty free on the aircraft. I have never seen this on USA-Canada flights.

Yes, he wants cheap booze, the price of which has not been influenced by the Canadian taxing authorities.

Please enlighten me how he will accomplish this doing the impossible.

He`s been told to pick it up at the duty free in his country of departure.
Do think the price in some American airport DF is influenced by Canadian taxing policies?

By the way. Have you ever seen a duty free on a Canada-USA flight? I have not and I told him so. (he asked about that too)

I don't know about doing the impossible but I know Breadman and he takes great pride in analyzing, developing, and implementing thrift strategies in various sectors of the tourist economy. Rest assured that if there is any possible way to purchase cheap and duty free booze, Breadman will have analyzed it, considered it and, if feasible, implemented it. They don't call him the Baron of Thrift for nothing.

There are duty free shops at the border going back to the USA by car. I have purchased duty free ice wine and other liquors many times, as well as maple syrup and gifts. The duty free shops are heavily stocked with liquor but many other items as well.

Between your arrival gate from the US and Canada Customs, there is ... NOTHING!

Ok, there is a bathroom. :p It's a frickin' long walk, with at least 2 flights of stairs/escalators. Though there is some talk about fixing this in the future.

So if your purpose is to drink in Montreal, without bringing in booze from the States, then the solution is

...

SAQ. :)

I never tried to buy something from the duty free at Dorval before passing through customs - in fact I do not know where those stores are located on arrival (didn't notice them). However, on my other travels I have bought duty free at the destination right before going through customs. The last time was in Reykjavik during the height of the financial bubble. Booze was very expensive at the time in Iceland ($10 for a beer, didn't matter where we were). I declared the alcohol at customs, and since it was below the maximum allowable I did not pay any tax or duty for it.

How much can you save? Last year I stopped off at the duty free store and bought a nice bottle of red wine duty free. I saved some money I thought. A week later I was grocery shopping at the local Walmart and found the same bottle about half price. Now I am no wine connoisseur but this was a little embaressing.

As has been stated, you can't purchase duty free upon arrival. You can buy from an airport in the US that has international flights. However...if you have a connecting flight, be careful. If you buy at your point of departure and you have to change terminals at the mid point, you may not be able to bring the booze through security at your connecting airport.

Remember....3-1-1 :)

You can save about 10 to 15$ on a 40 oz of whiskey, gin, vodka etc. Scotches, bourbons, Canadians well represented well.
Wines are not worth it. The selections are usually not good mostly tourist trap wines. And it depends what DF.
Designer perfumes, scarves, purses. You save gst & pst but not much more.
Tobacco. You save 10-20%.

Ice Wine

Ice wine is expensive at the Duty Free Shop, but there is a reason for this which is that it is a Canadian specialty wine. You can get ice wine in the USA which is made in Washington, but it is not as good as the Canadian variety (Inniskillin). Hence the tourist is forced to pay a premium price, but it is cheaper at the duty free shop than at SAQ.

I have seen Inniskillin selling at $40 (CDN) per bottle at the duty free shop. I buy it for my mother because she really likes it.

I agree with Mike Mercury concerning whiskey, Scotches, etc. The real bargain is there. Each time I travel to Brazil I bring with me, as a gift to some of my friends, bottles of Canadian Whiskeys.

Air Canada duty free catalogue See the prices.

This sites states
Flights to/from continental USA that are more than 3 hours Air Canda sells DF on the plane.
There are DFs on planes to/ftrom Hawaii, Europe, Caribbean, Latin America, Asia etc.

I looked very briefly for airport DF stores on-line but I gave up.

Im actually thrifty at everything BUT the hobby...luckily for me the hobby isn't close enough to home to spend too much on it day to day, although there are a few 'very good' stripclubs that offer $5 dollar grinds per song where basically the girl doesnt get off your 'c**k' the entire song...and another place has less contact but $2 dollar beers all night.

Im thrifty when I rent a car in germany for $200 bucks, stay at the fkk clubs till 4am and then sleep the 6 hours in the car before the club reopens at 10am, saving me $400 on hotels...enabling me to see 7 more girls.

The liquor is a weight thing, carrying a case of beer down the street for 35 bucks or a bottle of whisky...i'll carry the bottle anyday (same buzz)...and I don't have to try to keep the whisky cold.
