Also if I recall correctly the weekly pass is not a 7 days pass, it's a pass from that specific week, Monday to Sunday. The nuance is important because it means if you buy it on a Thursday you're only getting 4 days of use, not 7 !
I thought they changed that

I love public transit lol sometimes I take a random bus just for fun when I feel anxious. Obviously not during rush hour. But I listen to music and I find it meditative
Best way to discover a city and it's true for pretty much every city i guess.
Bus lines usually don't take the shortest trip, it a subtle itinerary based on where people live and where do they want/need to go.
So using a bus line from beginning to end will help you discovering places and areas google maps or Waze usually wouldn't take you.

Yes! I've lived in Montreal my whole life, but I still discover new areas sometimes :)

Doesn't look like it was mentioned but even if OP is only staying downtown, in the off chance he wants to visit Laval or South Shore, he'll need the right fare for those zones otherwise will risk being heavily fined. Even if the metro takes you to Laval and Longueuil, you can't set foot with a zone A fare... Stupid like that

The 747 bus will bring you very close if not right to the front of the Marriott. An Uber from the airport may be the way to go. It should be a set price and you can travel on your own schedule. It sucks when you miss the bus and have to wait for the next one. As far as getting around town, you are walking distance to pretty much anything you want to do. If there is something not close a quick Uber will get you there. As far as the subways in Montreal I use them all the time when I’m in town. Walk up to the booth where a clerk can assist or use the machines and do it yourself. It can get tricky when there is a delay or disruption in service if you don’t understand French. For the most part it’s pretty easy and you can pick up a map in the subway station.

There’s an elevator at Lionel-Groulx so you don’t have to stress with the suitcases etc. ...get off at Bonaventure station, there’s an elevator there too. From there you can reach your hotel via the underground. If it’s a cold or rainy day you’ll be happy to not have to walk outside. ... there’s quite a few homeless folks downtown but I have never been or seen someone get robbed. Most won’t even come near you. They’re hanging out amongst them.
I like elevators! Twice over the years at Toronto YYZ, a long escalator I had to go up was not working, so I had to haul myself with luggage up the big fixed steps. Even when working I find the elevators. I pack even a full-sized keyboard since I use it at home, even on the laptop as well as a PC since I am so used to it and usually too many clothes, but as a nerd I travel prepared :)

I use a smartphone for Uber, mapping, monitoring tons of email etc, but nothing I have to type much on since I have about a 50% error rate trying to type on a tiny keyboard :) In Frankfurt, the street mapping was great when I did a lot of walking and would have been lost trying to find a way back to the hotel without Google Maps. I never needed the translation app since almost everyone understood English well enough, including Uber drivers.

I have been in homeless areas many times and just ignored the panhandlers. I never had any issues in many downtown areas, even in Bangkok and Manila.

I have for years been tempted to go to the brothel like famous strip clubs of Tijuana, just a short hop from Phoenix via San Diego. I've been watching reviews for years, but the risk of shaking down for your money by the police is a greater risk than being robbed by street people. It is crazy; sometimes, cab drivers work with police to shake down tourists. In the Red Light district, the street gangs try to keep the area safe since it brings in so much money, and probably most of the clubs are gang or cartel-owned. But they want to keep tourists safe if you avoid the back alleys, etc. However, the police are a greater risk. They even know you may be hiding money in your sock, and some have suggested doing. TJ is much less expensive than US or Canada for our interests but just not worth the risks, I have concluded.

I have downloaded and printed various transmit maps and will put pins in Google Maps for places I might want to go, which I will also have on my laptop and phone. Whenever I travel, I make plans WAY in advance, more so in a "strange" city, mostly new to me, like Montreal. Just like I do spreadsheets for potential escorts, massage places and strip clubs. Detailed nerd, maybe from my CPA firm tax days.

Lunaseraphim said "I love public transit sometimes I take a random bus just for fun ...Obviously not during rush hour."

This might be a good way for me to absorb and see more of a new city after 22 years of absence.

Hopefully, there will be plenty of seats during non-rush hours. My only experience on trains is hanging onto a pole and standing on full trains between terminals at airports. In London, I had to take a crowded train twice back and forth as delayed connecting flights changed gates in different terminals back and forth.

If I dare come before Spring, I won't be doing walking tours. I assume transit is well-heated. My body is more adapted to the heat in Phoenix from my long ago escape from the cold, snow and misquotes of the Minneapolis area. Summers were hot and humid, with 88 feeling like 110 in the desert of Phoenix. At least Montreal is warmer, unlike -30 F in the winter.

Acclimatization takes 10 to 14 days, longer than I would be cold in Montreal. I do have old winter coats and gloves from Minnesota days... that may still fit :) I went from about 250lbs to below 200 over time and size 46 to 36-inch waste on the Atkins/Keto diet I am still on except when traveling and occasionally cheating dining at McDonald's. I am 6-1 and enjoy being next to a taller woman (dancer/escort), where I don't just look straight and see the top of their heads.

While I am not quite that old I read that modern humans emerged from Africa approximately 70,000 years ago during a period of unstable climate. When modern humans spread into Europe, they outcompeted Neanderthals. Researchers hypothesize that this suggests early modern humans were more evolutionarily fit to live in various climates, unlike old Dave.

One fun thing about Montreal is you can get to soooo many places downtown without setting foot outside! You can Google "Montreal underground city map"

Speaking of the underground.

In research, I read reports that it can be very confusing down there without good signage about where to go or where you are. Us tourists with maps in hand seem to have the advantage. However, the discussions I am finding are from a few years ago, so they may be better now.

I wonder if there is any wifi or cell service down there or if you get confused about where you are or how to get somewhere. Or do you pop up to the surface to look at Google Maps, which I have found great walking in unknown cities? I have cell service in Canada via T-Mobile, which connects with a roaming Canadian service. But I wonder if it will connect underground with all the steel etc, probably between us and the earths surface?

From what i understand you traveled a lot, if you use public transportation in Europe you won't have any problem in Montreal.
There is cell service on most subway lines (depending how deep they are), and signage is quite easy to find.
The "underground city" can be a bit confusing at times, and, to set expectations, the city is a connection of tunnels, shopping malls and subway tunnels.
I was expecting some kind of Fritz Lang's Metropolis ambiance when i arrived in Montreal and that's not what it is :)
