China Executes FDA Chief For Accepting Bribes

China has summarily executed its FDA Chief for accepting $850,000 in bribes from pharmaceutical companies in exchange for allowing approval of substandard drugs, including an antibiotic which resulted in several deaths. More on this developing story here:

Do you think the Chinese are to be commended for this unusually harsh and swift punishment, given what was at stake? Should public officials who betray a nation's trust be given harsher punishments for their crimes than others (say, a local building contractor accepting bribes)?

I am particularly interested in hearing Forever Newbie's thoughts on this. Also, the method of execution is not mentioned in the news reports. I was wondering what is the official state-sanctioned method of execution in China? I thought it was lethal injection.

From what I have read the official way to execute criminals is a single bullet shot in the head.
To top it all up, they actually send the bill for the bullet to the family.

China is the Wild West. There is no civilized rule of law. It's still a tyranny run by the old guard. The toothpaste scandal could cost them billions. Government officials took the shock & awe approach by executing this guy but corruption is rampant at the highest levels in their government. The West might denounce this action but Western governments turn a blind eye to Chinese human rights abuses. Why? Because Fortune 500 companies are in bed with Chinese authorities and corporations still dictate U.S. foreign policy.

Hello EB,

If one is aware of the magnitude of the health disaster concerning so many Chinese products due to the government's perpetuation of laissez faire contamination through it's own policies, then the execution is clearly a matter of the government shifting blame to cover it's own ass. The real issue here isn't the guilt of a responsible official. It's decontaminating official Chinese practices.

I like the fact that the lawbreakers get executed in China. I think people would be a lot less likely to kill each other, rape, steal etc over here if they knew that they'd be getting a bullet in the head for it... Think about it, the chinese may be many things, but stupid is not one of them...

We waste SO much money on jails -- I say ship all the criminals to China. Could be one way to reverse the trade deficit...

PS: OR -- we could keep wasting billions on providing resorts for our criminals (tv, fresh towels, gym, library, classes) -- WTF??? Is this jail, or the Holiday Inn? The quality of life is probabaly higher in a canadian jail than in many parts of China (both rural and urban)...

Yeah, and too bad if you happen to be found guilty by mistake.
As for the effectiveness of death penalty on the crime rate, just compare Canada and the US...

Well it may be a little extreme but if we had such strict laws here I doubt there would have been a sponsorship scandal.

Just look at our headlines...we have a 13 year old girl who was just convicted of killing her parents and 8 yr old brother and she will probably get about 6 years. And to top it off, her identity cannot be revealed and her records will be sealed. Once she turns 18 and has been released, we'll have a sociopathic killer walking around and we aren't even allowed to know who the hell she is!

Let face it:
China has 1.3 billion people, Canada has little over 30 million.

Would anyone use rules for 30 million on 1.3 billion???

As for Death paniuty, I guess Chinese do believe in the older systerm, which seems work better for Chinese anyway.
