computer advice needed regarding IP addressing & banning/blocking

So far twice I have been mistakenly banned by Fred b/c he said he had banned some ppl who had the same ISP as I did. So that is cool.

I just e-mailed him this morning.

The IP address he said was mine is actually not mine.

I have a router & firewall software that automatically rotates new IP addresses at random every hour or so for my protection.

Well at times as Fred Zed informed me that if he bans someone with the same ISP as me, I will be banned as well but not Fred's intentions.

My software selects IP addresses to use from all over the world & changes them every hour or so as I said.

What can I do to avoid being mistakenly banned or blocked?

I asked Fred what can I do but he said he was very busy.

Any insight would be good.

routing any IP in the world on whim is not possible, spoofing any IP is possible but easily detected

I use Zone Alarm, & Panda Anti-Virus that has a firewall along with a router.

I do at times however have to manually enter IP addresses if the software isn't working properly as it's not a fully cough purchased item.

Sometimes when it doesn't work properly I have to do a google search for an IP address & manually enter it in the LAN settings.

I find this strange, to say the least. Any IP address on a network (internet being a network) must be unique. This "contraption" of software might do, at best, some spoofing but, if your real address doesn't match what your ISP is providing, whatever it's static or dynamic, you won't connect to that ISP and traffic won't even reach you.
What's probably happening here is the software finds an address to spoof and insert it in the data stream. Looking-out for addresses can only lead to conflicts and lost data because this address might, at some point, have a real existence somewhere.
Even when spoofing, the "real" address is always visible and no local router software / firewall / antivirus can change that so, I'd say, it's not worth the trouble to try the spoofing trick. A properly configured router/firewall will prevent unauthorized access without the trouble of "address hunting" and spoofing and, since spoofing can probably be easily bypassed by any hacker who wants to, it's kind of useless for protection.
If the guy is on ADSL or dialup, he gets a different address every time he connects so, that's probably how he got banned. It can even happen on cable with a modem always connected, but far less often. Unless your ISP guarantee you a static or reserved IP address, it can change at any time.

I have high speed internet with Videotron.

But as I said I have to every so often manually enter an IP address in the LAN option under the connection category under your internet options.

So what can I do to avoid being banned by mistake?

The reason why I was asking is that I know you can’t do much about it on cable high-speed connections.

At the server level cable Internet providers give you a static IP addresses. Rotating them or masking them using software doesn’t do much since the protocol (http) picks up the server IP.

I don't know if Videotron does this but do they also give you a freebie dial-up phone number? That IP should be dynamic.

So what should I do?

Should I stop manually changing my IP addresses at times? I was recommended this for extra protection.

B/c this seems to be the cause of being banned mistakenly.

When Fred Zed returned my e-mail, the proxy he gave me that he said was mine, wasn't mine. It was one that I just recently entered.

No you are misunderstanding me. Say your IP is
24.85.93.74
If you have a dynamic IP that means the last 2 digits of your IP change every time you start a new session. So the only way I can ban you is by banning
24.85.93
However, if there are other MERB members from 24.85.93 they will also be affected. So unfortunately sometimes banning a person's IP can affect innocent members from the same network.

Cable companies give out dynamic IP to customers who don't pay for static. It appears to be static because the modem is always connected so, the IP is renewed constantly. If you take a cable modem, check your IP address and turn the modem off for about 24 hours, the IP you'll get the next day is likely to be different, if you don't pay for static. Some will allow more than 24 hours but it's a reasonable figure. Rogers was at 24 hours a few years ago, don't know if they still are.

A router connected to an ADSL line (Sympatico style) will get disconnected by the ISP once in a while and will reconnect instantly so, the address might change, or might stay the same if nobody else reconnected between the time your router disconnect and reconnect.

To be safer, get a real router, not software, and keep your antivirus up to date. Most routers are, by design, acting as a basic firewall. Just ensure the settings are not left wide open. A good computer shop should be able to guide you with purchase and configuration of one of those beast. With software firewall, your PC is still connected directly to the internet, only a piece of software who can be hacked is protecting you. Spoofing the address might even be more harmfull since it might cause problems to peoples you are spoofing from and, if they get pissed, they might find who's causing all the data loss they get... Remember, IP addresses on the net must be unique so when you and the real guy show-up, one of the two, or both, might get errors!

You might be in for a bumpy ride with Zone Alarm... I tried it also before I had a router and had basically the same problems as these guys, including settings that were taken over and impossible to change back. If you "lock" something by mistake, unlocking it was a real mystery most of the time. Uninstall was also a bitch on this thing. I avoided a reload but only after extensive "registry surgery". I hope it will be easier for you.

That's what I thought you meant but wasn't totally clear.

So I guess if I happen to be banned by mistake, all I can do is e-mail you?

DO you have an e-mail that you check frequently? B/c sometimes I don't hear back from you right away? Or is it that you're buys with as you said your other sites?

Not criticising, just want to know if there's a better way to get in touch with you.

I need a real router but I'm a short on cash now.

I just saved up enough for my first DVD burner by Pioneer, & I have to buy a new $100 JVC DVD player as my Sony Playstation2's DVD player does not play "all dvd's".

& not too mention that I have been saving the last few weeks for some fun time as my girlfriend & I have decided to take some time apart. So I'm quickly jumping at the chance for some much needed R & R.
