UPDATE:

First and formost, I want to thank everyone for their support. Having been a lone wolf most of my life, it's a change letting people in to help me.

Cautherizaion occurred on Monday at 11am and I was awake the entire time with full use of my body. The cath-lab was straight out of Star Trek with robots and men seeming to work in perfect harmony. The operating room of the lab was litteraly as big as 1/4 of a NFL Football Field.

One 95% blocked coronary artery and two 20%ers. Angioplasy on all three and stent in one. First indications are the heart damage was very limited. Initial Kidney functions seem OK.

They moved me downtown to a special coronary unit for the entire procedure and recovery. The private room with ceiling height celestory windows actually looks more like a four star hotel than a hospital room. It comes complete with a 52" interactive LCD (already set up for video calls), custom cabinet work, wood laminated floors, remote control everything including the blinds and mood lighting. My only complaint being not getting one of the lakefront rooms, and having to settle for the city view:rolleyes: But complete conference room facilities are available on each floor. Food was mid-priced resturant class. No pool. I would place it just below The Crystal in amenities & luxury. For the children, there's a Disney trademarked, themed and designed pediactric annex just steps away.

The group of Indian Doctors treating me has be outstanding. Each of the partners having personally come by to visit with me.
Looks like discharge is tomorrow, pending further evaluation.

All in all, I would give it a 8.5 (points taken off because only one of the nurses was hot).

I feel for you... Your description makes it a 6, at most 6,5, in Montréal standards. No pool and no gastronomical class food? That's a shame.

Montréal hospitals all rate over 8,5... after gaining 5 points nurse wide.

Are you back home recuperating nicely? Did your HMO approved home care for you by a hot nurse? ;)

CS's cardiac problems makes me wonder if there are American hobbyists out there who buy medical insurance prior to coming to Canada. You just never know when your health might take a turn for the worse. I'd hate to see anyone wind up stuck in a Canadian hospital with costly medical bills piling up.

p.s. For the record, i don't personally know of a single American hobbyist who's considered buying medical insurance prior to making a trip to Mtl.

I usually buy travel insurance any time I take a trip outside of the states.

Quick update: Home and resting well. Expecting to return to work on Monday.

Neighbors and friends have been especially helpful, even driving me around as the doctors won't let me drive until Monday. A tenant of mine calling just to make sure I was OK. Who knew people were so fond of me?? I may have to give up being a cranky ass-hole.....

The CEO of a financial institution was apparently heard to say (tongue in cheek) that nothing could happen to me until I worked out all of his problem loans.....LOL.

BTW Doc, good question. Americans can get a Canadian Auto Insurance Card from their carrier. Here's a plan from AMEX: https://www295.americanexpress.com/travel-insurance/home.do?aetiSource=FP10&extlink=pa-aeti-FP10 Seems to be about $32 per thousand for $100K coverage.

First and foremost - glad to hear that you are feeling better.

I recall you being a Boston or NYC guy, but if I were you I might take a few days off to smell the roses (which might be blown directly through your windows if this Hurricane follows its current track)

CS -- how's your recovery progressing? Ready to hop on a plane to Montreal to spend some quality time with your favorite ladies. ;) Make sure your HMO provides coverage in Canada, before you do so.

If you belong to a PPO or your HMO has out of network coverage, any medical situation should be considered out of network. You have to check with your insurance carrier. It still adds to alot.

But the American Express Policy that CS linked to seems very reasonable. I wonder if they expect you to have a primary policy.

You can get a Canadian Insurance card from most automobile insurers without extra charge. Most auto insurers include coverage in Canada but not Mexico. In fact, you are expected to have a Canadian Insurance card if you are stopped by the police in Canada.

Thanks for the tip DD. I'll talk to my travel agent next about getting a Canadian Insurance card. The travel insurance I generally buy provides medical coverage up to $100,000 anywhere I go plus emergency extraction service back to the States. I don't trust my HMO but they are good at paying for medical services rendered by in-network providers of my choice. I have AAA membership which helps with tow coverage, etc.

You need to contact your auto insurer for the Canadian Insurance card, not your travel agent.

Thanks for sharing your helpful insights, Day Dreamer. I'll try to have a CIC next time I travel to Canada. The travel insurance I generally buy covers me for up to $100,000 in medical expenses and all reasonable costs for emergency extraction back to the States. My HMO has been pretty good but I'm paranoid about seeking medical services from non-network providers, especially those outside the States. My AAA membership has been good about covering any incidents arising out of my use of a car in Canada; AAA once covered a 350 KM tow; I told them it would be cheaper than to put me up in a local hotel and other covered expenses.
