Debit card issue

Hi all. I've just got a quick question I was hoping someone could help me out with.

I was thinking about making a trip this weekend, but the chip in my debit card is malfunctioning. I have trouble here in the states pulling out money from an ATM because of this. Are there still ATMs there that you can use the mag strip and if not, any idea how I can pull out cash once there?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm not 100% sure about this... but I do have a bank card with a defective chip. It works on and off... and there are machines that simply won't accept it.
In establishements however, they will quickly allow you to use the mag strip... but I've had issues.

Just make sure you have a Plan b

I don't have a bank that has branches. The upside to that is that they have no atm fees or foreign transaction fees. The downside is, when you have an issue like this you're screwed until they send you a new one.

I found that it does work in gas station atm machines. Any major bank has been a fail though.

Thanks for your replies.

Canada is ahead of the USA on credit and debit card technology. They had gone to chips in lieu of magnetic stripes long before the US did. At Montreal restaurants the card machines are built for chips. I had thought it was supposed to be the law in the US that you would get a card with a chip at the end of 2016. Magnetic stripe is out now.

Get a new card. Also tell your card company you are travelling to Canada, if you don’t they will assume fraud with the first use of the card in Canada, freeze the account, and you will be without a means to pay. A few years ago this happened to me and if it were not for having some extra Canadian cash and a backup card, my car would have been locked in the Old Forum garage and my ass stranded in Montreal. Always have backup card and backup cash.

This doesn’t necessarily answer your question but what about just walking into your local branch and taking out cash?

The exchange rate in Montréal is probably better at Calorfex than it is with your local bank.

At least you control what happens this way. Hoping that a debit card works in a foreign land is not a good plan.

Calforex on Peel South of St. Catherine gives you a very good rate, better than all the other places downtown.

.

Just go to a gas station atm close to your home, withdraw some cash, put it in your wallet, and drive to Montreal for the week-end !
