He has been treating throat cancer for almost 10 years and quite a few years ago had part of his tongue removed due to the disease, so I don't think it was that much of a shock. He was certainly a revered guitar God with his own style, best exemplified by his guitar solo "Eruption" on Van Halen 1:
Heard Eruption earlier today on the radio as part of an " hommage " and I was teary eyed...

Eddie Van Halen, the self taught Van Halen guitarist who influenced a generation of players with his legendary licks, has died of cancer. He was 65 years old and had health problems for a number of years. His son and teammate, Wolfgang Van Halen (as Beethoven).
In some circles he was called the "Mozart of quitare rock"

EVH influenced so many generations of rock fans...there’s barely a guitarist in the world who didn’t idolize the innovative playing of fast-fingered Eddie!
3 of my favorite all time songs by anyone would be VH songs:

2. Everybody Wants Some!! ( a song I imagine most of us relate to hehe).
3. Panama
Like Ritchie Blackmore, Eddie had a style that was unique and unmistakable. There will never be another one quite like him.

On a personal note one of my close family members also passed away yesterday as did my co-worker's dad.
That fucking Grim Reaper sure was working overtime.
