Okay, why a dedicated thread for the lowly Edmonton Oilers?

The Edmonton Oilers have had several number ONE or very high draft picks over the past few years (see draft info at bottom). Yet, they have failed to produce. This is a pathetic organization.

I hope we see some major moves, making hockey news, and all of the following occur this season:
* Fire MacTavish
* Fire Eakins
* Trade some / many of their assets

Is it Steve Tambellini's fault (former GM)? What will they get in return? For Yakupov? For Hall? For RNH? For Eberle?

Honestly, I can't figure out why Craig MacTavish is still the Oilers GM.

Darryl Katz is too fucked up not to see the shit that is going on, he wants to keep the good old boys in the fold. If Mac T, Lowe & Eakins stick around nothing will change. My original home is Edmonton, stopped being an Oiler fan this year, will not switch teams but fuck the organization.

The first person i'd get rid of is Kevin Lowe. The team has been a mess with him on board.

I'm not sure i'd fire the GM or the coach. One thing the team has been lacking in recent years is consistency. You can't keep on firing coaches and GM's every couple of years or so. Look at the Islanders. They were patient with Capuano and Snow....and now it's paid off since they're one of the best teams in hockey.

But one thing i'd do is start trading some of the young star players....Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Yakupov or Eberle. The Oilers need good veteran players and especially defencemen. They also need a true #1 goalie. The formula of going with the kids isn't working and it's time to do make drastic changes in order not to totally lose the fan base. Recent games have not been sell-outs in Edmonton. It's time to move on and try something else.

From what I have read Darnell Nurse is developing nicely and is expected to be a key guy on the Canadian junior team in the Worlds:

Nurse is the nephew of Donovan McNabb, former NFL QB, and the older brother of Kia Nurse, the freshman star player on the UConn women's basketball team. Although I am not an Oilers fan per se, I have been following Darnell's progress because I am a big fan of Kia. The UConn coaches have decided to start Kia and she rewarded them by winning the MVP of the Gulf Coast showcase tournament which UConn won this past weekend. For those of you who have not seen Kia, she is 17 years old, is 6'0" tall, is the starting point guard on the Canadian women's national basketball team, has a pro body, and in addition to being big, strong, and athletic, she is extremely aggressive and a fundamentally sound basketball player. Donovan McNabb showed up at a few UConn games this year to watch Kia play. He will probably show up at UConn's nationally televised showdown with Notre Dame this Saturday.

Kia is clearly a future All American player for UConn and will be in the WNBA some day, you can bank on it. At this point it is too early to say which of the Nurse siblings will be better at their respective sports, but it will be interesting to watch how both develop. If Darnell is anything like his sister as far as temperament and aggressiveness and competitiveness and being a team player, Oilers fans will be proud. He is only 19 which is way young for a defenseman. Give him time to develop.

Sadly, these kids' careers will suffer tremendously. They won't learn how to win, or be competitive, or improve, or play as a team, until they get traded.

And what will be their value? What will another team give up for Nugent-Hopkins? Definitely not a 1st AND 2nd round pick. Yet, that's probably what Edmonton expects in return. Edmonton will be lucky to get a late 1st round pick for Yakupov.

I agree with you. The Oilers are likely asking too much in return for their kids, yet they must absolutely trade them in order to save the franchise. No top free agents will want to play in Edmonton, so the only option left are trades. And their best trade options are those kids.

Leon Draisaitl never showed have been alowed to start the season with the team. He should have been sent down to junior for more seasoning, like most teams do with their draft picks. Same thing for the other kids they picked over the years. Rushing them into the NHL doesn't do them any good & only hurts their progress.

It's time for the old boys club to be shown the door out of Edmonton & bring in people that know how to run a hockey organization properly. It's no surprise that the Calgary Flames began playing much better once Brian Burke took over. Kudos to Burke for keeping Bob Hartley as his coach when he took over the reigns. President/GMs usually want to bring in their own people when they join an organization, but Burke went with his gut-feeling (and experience) and stuck with the more experienced Hartley.

Edmonton, on the other hand, stuck a rookie coach with the young kids they had on the team. Rarely does such a move work. Now the organization, the players & especially the coach himself are paying the price for that mistake. Dallas Eakins was once a very highly-regarded coaching prospect (when he was with the Marlies), but now he's become a joke & will have trouble finding NHL employment as a head coach again.

The Oilers had a press conference and I was hoping to hear " We as management did a very poor job and are stepping down for the better of the team ".
What we got was Mac T saying all is good, the team is actually better than last year but we ( the fans ) do not see it. No changes will be made.

Would you trade two late (25+) 1st rounders for Nugent-Hopkins? I would only do it (2 1st rounders) for Taylor Hall.

I still dont think Nugent-Hopkins is that great of a talent YET, never did either. He is a boy in a boys body and a boys mind, much like the other top picks on the team. He should have been sent back to Jr. for a season and then to the AHL for at least one season. You have all these teenagers/young inexperienced kids on the Oilers when they arrived straight out of Junior and they do not know how to handle a mans game at a mans level. Stupid thinking to keep them all around at once just because they were #1 draft picks (or top 5)

Hall is the only player that should have stayed on the team after getting drafted and the only one I would want on the Leafs at this point if i had to pick one player from that bunch. Olilers management should hope and pray they have not ruined any of those kids. Lowe and MacT should both be fired and the owner be made to sell the team, Idiots!

I heard on Sportsnet that the Oilers are making Taylor Hall available for the right price. Many believe that it would be a mistake to trade him. Personally, he's the only player i'd keep on that roster. What do you guys think? Should they trade him for the right price? And what is the right price if you do trade him?

Nothing would surprise me with this team. They can trade Gretzky they can trade Hall. But I would not recommend they do that.

I suppose it always depends what they'd get for Taylor Hall. If some other team wants to be foolish and overspend for him, so be it. But my guess is that most teams in the NHL don't regard Taylor Hall as high as the Oilers do.

As for Gretzky being traded, the Oilers did manage to win another Cup after that trade was made. Mark Messier may never have become the great leader he became had it not been for the Great One's exit from Edmonton.
