Don't get the love for Macs (especially for people that "should" know their technology - engineers, IT people, etc). You're paying way more $ for way less power.

On top of that, we need to pay for the extended warranty to really benefit from Apple: really??

Meh...will stick to PCs instead :p

Extended warranties are not worth it for appliances and electronics. For some people that want a trouble free car, a 6 or 8 year warranty may be worth it and may add value to the car if you plan to sell privately with some warranty.

Completely agree with you. For myself I stick to pc on which I run windows and linux usually. I change pc every year. As all my stuff is in the cloud, it takes 30 minutes to set myself up on a new laptop. No warranty for me.

But web developers and graphic/video technician pretty much all prefer to work on apple products. So we buy what they prefer to work on even if it's way more costly. They do tend to last much longer down the road.

Cheers,

In my opinion, I also believe it’s a waste of money. Just read the fine print and usually it does not cover the stuff that usually goes wrong in the product. Reputable compagnies like apple, Sony etc will replace your product if a known defect happens. For example my iwatch ver 1 just popped its cover and went dead. It was due to a battery problem which would ballon out when charging, the pressure on the front glass would pop it out. This is a known defect and inspite of the fact that the watch was out of guarantee, apple agreed to replace it free of charge.
Save your money and research your product, look carefully at the reviews, what you really need and expensive does not necessary mean better or more sophisticated.
I wouldn’t mind however buying a warranty on SP’s. Imagine getting your money back if not satisfied, lol.

Then the place would have two lines, one for guys buying the warranty and the other line for guys claiming they were not satisfied. The day after it opens it would shut down because they would be bankrupt.

Credit cards often give warranty coverage for items purchased with them.
I have a Visa that extends the manufacturers warranty by one year. Buying a one year extended warranty from a store would be a waste of money.

A friend used to be a Future Shop store manager. She said they could sell most big ticket items at cost because all their profit was in extended warranties and services like delivery and installation. Best Buy charges a fortune to install and adjust your big screen TV, for example.

Some of these extended warranties are tough to actually collect on. They often have a bunch of "discretionary" clauses to avoid giving you anything. Replacement may mean a brand new item, or it may mean a used refurbished item. Make sure which one it is.

From an economic point of view, my understanding is that extended warranties are a poor wager. However, the additional cost does buy "peace of mind" for some people and for them it might be worth it, even if they know that it doesn't make financial sense. There's more than one way to calculate value.

We should diffentiated extended warranties given by the actual company you are buying the product from warranty given by general shops like Best Buy.

I often buy extended warranties directly from Apple/Dell/Sony etc... But never ever at best buy and such shop.

I am finally entering this century and planning to buy a DSLR camera

This thread has apparently digressed quite a bit...

Which camera make and model? How much use will it get? Where do you plan on purchasing it? I believe I can give you the answer you are looking for based on the specifics...

I use to buy high end photographic equipment, then decent cameras came with my phone. For the last 4 years I have yet to touch my multi thousand dollars cameras, lol. Taking all my photos with the phone now! Well almost all...

The best thing about a camera phone is that you always have it with you. My clients won't accept phone pics unfortunately. Composition-wise, I can take the same photo with my phone, mirrorless, DSLRs, or multi multi DSLR cost medium format digital cameras. Lens, control, and image quality are an entirely different issue though.
