The star, who launched his career with Wham in the 1980s and later continued his success as a solo performer, is said to have "passed away peacefully at home".

Thames Valley Police said South Central Ambulance Service attended a property in Goring in Oxfordshire at 13:42 GMT.

Police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

I admit his earlier songs were easy to listen to even now still and they contain some deep lyrics. Yes, may he RIP. He did contribute significantly to the world of musicality following his still classic album. One of my younger sister continue to love his songs even through college and law school.

What happened to him? He was only 53 years old. I saw him on 60 Minutes a year or two ago and although he had gained a few pounds from his Wham! days, he looked reasonably healthy. He was talented, and Careless Whisper is a classic song from the 1980s. Really a shame to die so young. It's been a tough year for the pop stars of the 1980s.

I should post my personal favorite song by George Michael, "I'm Your Man." This song came out when Wham! was at its peak in popularity. They were, up until then, considered mostly a girls' heartthrob band. But when this song came out and the accompanying video which I posted below, I was like, "wow, that guy is talented, and pretty good looking too". I figured he was getting laid like crazy, only to find out later he is not playing on the same team as me and actually was not getting laid by women (although he as rumored to be dating Princess Diana at that time). But he could sing and dance and perform- this video got heavy play on MTV in the mid 1980s:

Call me good
Call me bad
Call me anything you want to baby
But I know that you're sad
And I know I'll make you happy
With the one thing that you never had
Baby, I'm your man (don't you know that?)
Baby, I'm your man
You bet!
If you're gonna do it, do it right, right?
Do it with me
So good
You're divine
Want to take you, want to make you
But they tell me it's a crime!
Everybody knows where the good people go
But where we're going baby
Ain't no such word as no!
Baby, I'm your man (don't you know who I am?)
Baby, I'm your man
You bet!
If you're gonna do it, do it right, right?
Do it with me
Come on baby, (ooh, take me home
Please don't leave me here, to do it on my own)
First class information
I'll be your sexual inspiration
And with some stimulation
We can do it right

I didn't realize the breath and depth of George Michael musical talents and the sizable numbers of great songs he performed. "Careless Whisper" should be in the hall of music fame and Library of Congress. The dude was only a teenage when he wrote and sang that (very mature) song and it's ageless!

I almost teared up when I saw the news. I have been listening to Careless Whisper on a loop since evening. Brings back so many memories.

People can die at any age. My experience is that once you've hit the 40's and 50's, you're in new territory. Just like Craig Cunningham, the 26-year old captain of the Tuscon Roadrunners (AHL) who suddenly collapsed on the ice a few weeks ago and went into cardiac arrest. Take Dallas Stars forward Rich Peverley who suddenly went into cardiac arrest while sitting on the bench two days ago. I personally know people who've had heart attacks while in their 20's and 30's. You can have heart attacks at any time. You can have abdominal aortic aneurysms at any time. You can have blood clots at any time which will compromise your life.

In George Michael's case, he once had a serious drug problem (like cocaine) which could have eventually led to heart problems. But who knows, it could have been genetic. Maybe his parents and grandparents had previous dispositions to heart ailments, who knows.

Heck, Elvis Presley was only 42 years old when he died of cardiac arrest. Most have blamed his premature death on his long-term abuse of prescribed medications. But his mother died at a very young age also, so who knows maybe Elvis still would have been dead at a young age had he not even touched any drugs during his lifetime.

He actually swung from both sides of the plate. He very might have been getting laid 'like crazy' from both men and women back in the 80's.

Yes and I recall rumors of a tryst he had with Princess Diana but it seems like by the 1990s he was mostly in relationships with men and when he was interviewed by 60 Minutes a few years ago I think he was living with a guy.

Regarding Elvis, I think the Doctor who prescribed all his Meds ended up getting criminally charged. Elvis maintained a very unhealthy excess amount of weight in his final years much like Jim Morrison. I read that he was giving concert performances while high and there are actually videos of it on the internet. He was a sad spectacle at the end but we can only speculate about the impact of all the pills and excess weight on his cardiac health. It likely didn't improve it.

Yes, turned out to be as queer as a French horn. This gives new meaning to the name of his group, Wham.

Regardless - RIP George. 53 is pretty darn young.

A couple of personal facts about George that you may not know.
His mother was born Jewish but her family sent her to a convent to get rid of her Jewishness.
George didn`t find out this information till later in life.

One of his early male lovers died of AIDS.....so (I`m speculating here)....AIDS may be a factor in his death.
