There will be a goaltender drafted in the first round this year, Sharkman.
His name is Yaroslav Askarov.
Prior to the WJC tournament, some experts even saw him as a first pick overall!!!

Jeff,

Both you and Sharkman are correct. Sharkman is correct because normally, you don't take a goalie 1st round. However, Askarov will go in the first round, because he may be the best goaltending prospect IN NHL HISTORY, according to some experts. Not the best in a decade. Not the best in generation. The BEST PROSPECT IN GOAL EVER. That's why he will go in the 1st round, and maybe #1 overall.

YES, I remember that name, I had suggested to keep him and get rid of Price

I was told I was crazy (Because Yaroslav was not tall enough as Price) was one of the arguments.

Look at Boston goaltending these days, they have a super duo, where thier backup is much better then Montreal's so called number 1.

I was told I was crazy (Because Yaroslav was not tall enough as Price) was one of the arguments.

Look at Boston goaltending these days, they have a super duo, where thier backup is much better then Montreal's so called number 1.

The main reason they kept Price was because they had just picked him 5th overall, he was younger & had more potential than Halak. Keeping him over Halak was a no-brainer. Look, they made the right move by selecting Carey Price 5th overall. Go back to that draft and the only player of note after Price is Kopitar and he was selected 11th. Many teams passed on him. And Price is a likely hall-of-famer and did play to his potential for most of his career.

The problem is that the team in recent years has been built around Price. The organization figured the league would remain the same and would be a low goal-scoring league. They figured that as long as they could score 2 goals per game they'd win the majority of the games since Price would take care of the rest. But in the meantime the game changed when the league made adjustments to encourage more goals to be scored. It became once again a high-scoring league where emphasis is on goal-scoring and not as much on defence. The end-result is that the habs failed to adapt and which is why most of their forwards are speedy, grinder types with no scoring touch. And getting rid of Markov & Subban didn't help scoring either. This duo was deadly on the powerplay.

But we could see future problems would come about when Geoff Molson overruled his GM and ordered him to re-sign PK Subban to the biggest contract in hockey at the time. The big contract was one of the reasons why the team felt it had to trade him when it did (his non-movement clause would kick in that July 1st) and the only way to get rid of him at the time was to take on a similar calibre player with a similar contract: Shea Weber.

But the team didn't learn its lesson from the Subban signing and just a couple of years ago made Carey Price the highest-paid goaltender in history. He's also the highest-paid player on his team. But the biggest problem with that contract was that it's an 8-year contract. Like Weber's contract it only ends in 2026 when Price will be nearly 40 years old and Weber will be well over 40. Weber's contract is what people pointed to at the time of his trade for Subban: Subban was the younger player and he may still be playing hockey when his contract would end. This wouldn't likely be the case with Weber unless he's an anomaly like Chara or Chelios.

Contract such as these are cap-killers, especially when one of those contracts belongs to the starting goaltender. Weber is still productive now but how will he look 2 years from now when he'll be 36 with 5 more years left?

Had Marc Bergevin been allowed to stick to his guns in his tough negotiation with Subban's camp the team would likely not be in the mess it is today. Subban may still be a hab. Price likely would have re-signed with the habs but possibly not for as much as he did. And the team would have more cap money to work with in order to attract free agents who can put the puck in the net on a regular basis.

Took Price 662 games and Dryden 397..almost 300 more games to reach 46 shutouts. And Halak has 50 shutouts in 509 games...Still think Price is "best in the world"?

Lets not forget Dryden, winner of Calder trophy (ROY) and the Conn Smyth trophy (Never mind the 6 Vezinas) along
with 6 stanley cups in what, 8 years.

What a shame his name is appearing with the greats (Dryden, Jaques Plante 6 cups, 8 Vezinas) and once he finishes his
playing time with Montreal (Per his contract)....he might as well have all the records to himself and could be the "Best in the world"
for winning the most meaningless games (And most probably no cup of course).

And we wasted no 5 draft pick, instead we could have waited for the 9th round ???

Jaroslav Halak
Draft: 2003 MTL, 9th rd, 10th pk (271st overall)
And more shutouts then Price, Wow...

This I didn't know

Dryden was drafted fourteenth overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1964 NHL Amateur Draft. Days later, June 28, Boston traded
Dryden, along with Alex Campbell, to the Montreal Canadiens for Paul Reid and Guy Allen.

PS: Hey Jalimon, I may know few thing or two about hockey afterall LOL

The habs play Chicago tonight and they chose to rest Carey Price in favor of Charlie Lindgren. The habs play tomorrow and that's likely the reason why but it's still surprising considering they'll have a week to rest due to the all-star break coming up. Chicago played a hard-fought game last night in Ottawa and may be tired for tonight's game, so maybe that's why Julien elected to go with Lindgren over Price.

As for Brendan Gallagher his headaches are gone but he'll remain out of the lineup for tonight's game. Doctors don't believe his headaches are due to his recent concussion. This fellow has taken a lot of physical abuse over his career and it wouldn't surprise me if his game starts declining. He's had a few concussions during his NHL career and this will eventually start to affect his game.

By the way Marc Bergevin told TSN reporter Pierre Lebrun that he's not interested to move Carey Price & Shea Weber.

Just think about what Ottawa got for Karlsson, Stone, Hoffman...Imagine their GM saying he wasn't interested in trading them. Ottawa has a much brighter future than Habs including (probably) 2 top 5 picks in this year's draft. Same with Boston trading Lucic, Doogie Hamilton...Berg may have made a few good trades but being a good GM is much more than trades...trade just repair mistakes you've made via draft

I don't think Bergevin will be around long enough to answer any phone call.

I'm not too sure of that. The team's president appears to be in love with Bergevin. That president is also the team owner. That's what happens when the team owner shares two important roles & is too close to his subordinate.

Count me among those who believe Marc Bergevin will still be the GM come next season. Claude Julien? Unfortunately he may be gone. But the team's current misfortunes are squarely on Bergevin and definitely not on Julien. But that's hockey for you: the wrong people end up getting fired.
