Look at this 2023 Draft projection they have the Habs picking Matthew Wood of my UConn Huskies #4!!!!

"Matthew Wood, C/W, UConn

The last time UConn had a high-profile draft-eligible player on their roster was Tage Thompson, who ended up going 26th overall to St. Louis in 2016. Just last season, Thompson had his NHL breakout with 38 goals and 68 points for the Buffalo Sabres, securing a long-term contract extension this summer. Matthew Wood may have a chance to go even higher in the draft than Thompson did and gives the Huskies another true blue-chipper.

Unlike Fantilli and Stramel, Wood is not a late 2004 birth date but rather a first-year eligible who was born in 2005. Wood should be a high school senior this year, but instead managed to finish early and has enrolled at UConn, set for his freshman campaign. Wood is a 6-foot-3, 190-pound forward who seems to always find himself in the right spots and has a goal-scorer’s instinct.

He led the entire BCHL in scoring last season with 85 points and a staggering 45 goals in 46 games. In the last 25 years, only one player had a better draft-minus-one season and that was Kent Johnson, who was drafted fifth overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2021. Johnson scored at 1.94 points per game his last season in the BCHL, while Wood scored at a 1.85 clip. Wood also had the higher goal total in fewer games and is bigger and stronger. Notably, Johnson was a late birthdate, so was a bit older than Wood was in his draft-minus-one season.

Wood also made Team Canada as an underager at last year’s U18 World Championship, scoring two goals in the tournament. This summer, he played for Canada at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, posting five points in five games as Canada won the tournament.

A native of Nanaimo, B.C., Wood is a long way from home playing at UConn and he actually turned down the opportunity to play in the WHL alongside Connor Bedard with the Regina Pats. The fact that Wood has decided to challenge himself by attending college a year early and not simply going to one of the blueblood programs that has dozens of NHL alumni is going to speak to NHL teams. This is a player with the confidence to bet on himself and the skill to give himself a chance to go very high in this draft."

Hey les boys, Monahan c’est un bon joueur de hockey avec des stats surprenantes (sept saisons consécutives de 20 buts+ avant le Covid)
Just saying… gros but à soir en plus.

Oui gros but, mais c'est, malgré tout, un joueur que je vois sur le cruise control et manque de chien, comme Drouin, Hoffman, Dandonov. J'aimerais me tromper.

This was a positive win for the Habs. I should note however that all of the preseason previews I read suggested that the Leafs team has taken a step back because of the goalie downgrade from Soup Campbell to Matt Murray. Meanwhile many are saying the Oilers are a Cup threat because of Soup Campbell shoring up the goalie position. So Edmonton is ranked 3 and the the Leafs 6 on the power rankings. Habs are sure to rise up from 29. Maybe mid 20s next week?

I'd be very surprised if the habs finish higher than 28, Leafs are still a big threat but strictly base on offense. Not sure about Oilers being serious contenders, we shall see.

Habs will likely finish somewhere between 25-30. Chicago and Philadelphia should be worse. Maybe Arizona. Maybe 1 or 2 other teams. But if they keep the team together and allow them to grow together they will improve their rank every year. Hughes probably knows this.

I view Edmonton and Toronto very similarly: as teams that are good but not enough defense. Of course I thought the same about Colorado last year, so we will see.

The Leafs started off badly last season but two weeks later began to play great once the team settled down, the lines became set & players got used to playing together. The team ended up having a great season & set a franchise records for season points. This season is no different. Only the first line remains intact & several new players are now on the team, including both goaltenders. I found that two-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Murray played very well last night & made some big saves. The team in front of him was sloppy but that’s normal so early into the season. What burned them was the Muzzin-Holl defensive pair. They were brutal.

The Vegas oddsmakers have the Leafs at #2 to win the Cup. I find this a bit high. I would have put them behind Colorado, Tampa, the Rangers & possibly Carolina. With the two best goaltenders in the world the Bolts & Rangers are going to be hard to beat.

As for the Habs they should be better than last season if Jake Allen is able to play at least 50 games & doesn’t get injured again. The forwards are very good in my opinion. But the defence lacks a lot of experience. Edmundson being injured again hurts the team, same with Mathison. But Cole Caulfield is off to a much better start than last season & other forwards that had off years such as Mike Hoffman & Johnny Drouin should have better seasons.

I expect Arizona to finish last with Chicago or Seattle close behind. I don’t put the Flyers in that group for the simple reason that John Tortorella is their new coach & he won’t put up with any lazy players & b.s. this season. But i think the habs will be slightly better than the Flyers.
