URGENT! GIVE NOW. IT'S EASY!

As you no doubt have heard, Haiti took yet another hit yesterday afternoon with a devastating earthquake hitting close to the capital city, Port-au-prince.

There is no worse place in the northern hemisphere were this could have happened; Haiti is our poorest neighbour, and of course, Montreal has the largest ex-pat Haitian community in the world which brings this right back home.

Please consider donating something to the aid organizations working on earthquake relief. Maybe even skip your next visit to a massage parlour or SP and donate the money instead.

This link has a list of aid organizations.

Thanks.

A tragedy for sure.

Perhaps there needs to be a long-term effort to assist the Haitians with infrastructure (Earthquake-proofing buildings).

Well, the last one was '84. Their major disasters since then have been hurricane-related, mudslides caused by rapacious deforestation by American lumber companies, and of course, their horrible political situation for many years. Right now, what is needed is money to feed, cloth and house victims.

I'd like members to remember we are dealing here with a human tragedy and color, race, political or religious beliefs, all these have no place to be discussed in this thread.

We are all human, no matter what so, let's have some solidarity here for people who are victims of the randomness of Mother Nature.

Either you agree with YVO's initiative or not, either you donate or not, it's your business and whoever doesn't agree with you is entitled to their opinion too. Be respectful please.

Any attempt to derail this thread with racist slur or otherwise create chaos will result in the offending members getting banned for a long time.

Thanks for your understanding.

P.S.: I am putting this thread as a sticky for a while.

For now, it is probably best to let the U.S. and Canadian military to their job. The problem with having volunteers flood into a disaster area is is that they need to be housed and fed too, and right now, there isn't any of that to go around. This will takes years to fix, and there will come a time when you could volunteer with an NGO, and help the rebuilding process. Until then, send money. Do it now. They take paypal, credit cards, and Wyclef's YELE project is taking donations by text in the U.S.: www.yele.org

UPDATE: Canadians can also text donations. To donate $5 to the Salvation Army's Haiti Relief Fund, text the word "Haiti" to 45678

I was kind of shock to hear that near 50% of the population in Haiti lives with $200.00 annual income.

WOO... $200.00 per year ! When most of the hobbyist here are spending near $200.00 for one hour to live a fantasy.

So I decided to donate this week $200.00 to an organism to help Haiti.

I think this is not too much demanding and hope some hobbyists and SWs will follow me.

10-4!

I donated $100 this morning, but sure, I'll match that.

Don't forget to be very careful where you donate your money. Disasters like this tend to attract a lot of scam artists looking for a quick buck. There's a list at cjad.com of reputable relief agencies and their contact information. I heard on a couple of different radio stations today that the Haitian authorities are requesting funds be sent to the Red Cross.

The canadian government just announced that it will match donations from their citizens up to 50 millions dollars! So when you give 200$ they will receive 400$ ! The donation must be given to an organism recognized by the government.

It is certain I will make a donation, no matter the answer, but I was wondering if they give taxe receipts? To follow 10-4Roger's excellent suggestion, if we can put our donation on our income tax report, for a contribution out of our pocket of 200$, we could donate around 300$ (depending of our income level) and that way our total contribution (doubled by the government) would reach 600$.

If you care, and it sounds like you do, there a new book out called Portfolios of the Poor: How the World's Poor Live on $2 a Day - the author will be on CBC radio's Ideas show next week. I saw this featured on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation website

http://www.amazon.com/Portfolios-Poor-How-Worlds-Live/dp/0691141487

http://www.gatesfoundation.org/fina...-photo-gallery.aspx/new-insights-into-poverty

speaking of famous people, Google just donated a million to Haiti relief, and Tiger Woods has been approached by rap impresario Russell Simmons to give 3 million.

Also, techman is quite right - be very careful about where you donate your money, the FBI issued a warning yesterday about how scammers grab these opportunities. Probably best to go with Wyclef's yele.org

UPDATE: The Smoking Gun has some dirt on Wycelf Jean and his charity as it turns out:
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2010/0114102wyclef1.html

Best to donate to oxfam I guess.

The recognized organizations are listed on the cjad site I linked to in my above post. For Canadians I think it's best to donate through one of those as the amount will be matched by the government.

How to help Haiti's quake victims

How to help Haiti's quake victims
By Jan Ravensbergen, The GazetteJanuary 15, 2010

MONTREAL – The city’s Sun Youth Organization Thursday joined the many other voices emphatically urging that all financial aid to help with Haiti earthquake relief be channelled through the Red Cross.

All wishing to contribute are being re-directed – to the Canadian Red Cross, Quebec division at 1-800-418-1111 or www.redcross.ca/helpnow – the Montreal community group said in a press release.

The Red Cross is “a longtime partner of Sun Youth,” the organization noted.

Leaders of the Montreal region’s large Haitian community had issued the same strong suggestion Wednesday, as the devastating extent of the carnage and suffering was becoming increasingly apparent.

“The Red Cross already has on-site volunteers and its Quebec staff is able to receive donations from the public to assist people in Haiti,” the Sun Youth statement said.

“As for other organizations, prudence is the word. It is important to give to renowned organizations and to make sure that they will use whatever they collect to immediately assist the Haitian population.

“Unfortunately,” its statement added, “some unscrupulous people take advantage of such tragedies to fraud donors wishing to contribute to the relief efforts.”

It said it issued the release “following many phone calls received from donors seeking information” and that Sun Youth “is not collecting funds, food or any other material goods to assist the people of Haiti hit Tuesday by a powerful earthquake.”

Some of the many others:

World Vision, WorldVision.ca/help and via 1-800-268-5528.

Rogers and Fido cellphone customers can donate $5 to Haitian relief efforts by sending the text message “HELP” to shortcode 1291 – with up to six donations totalling $30 per billing cycle.

The Combined Jewish Appeal of Montreal has established a fund for humanitarian relief aid: www.federationcja.org/haiti or call 514-345-2600.

The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal said it would channel donations by telephone, via 1-800-464-9154, and by www.thehumanitariancoalition.ca – whose members include CARE Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam-Québec and Save the Children Canada.

The Salvation Army, www.salvationarmy.ca, 1-800-SAL-ARMY (725-2769)

Quebec Command of The Royal Canadian Legion: Cheques should be made out to Quebec Provincial Command (Haiti) and sent to their offices at 1000 St. Antoine Street W., No. 410. Montreal, QC, H3C 3R7.

St. John Ambulance is sending volunteer first responders and needs $250,000 for food, water and equipment. Call 1-888-840-5646 or donate online via CanadaHelps.org. Great initiative Eva Charms. If every merb member donates the equivalent of an option, that would accumulate to a nice sum. I've made my contribution.
