They did not earn it on the ice in the regular season, but Covid 19 has created a 24 team playoff tournament the NHL plans to stage, with the Habs a monkey ball-sucking 12 seed (lowest possible seed) against the 5th seeded Penguins:

There was no way this team was making the playoffs if the regular season finished in the normal course, but now, solely due to Covid 19, and having nothing to do with what this team earned on the ice, they are in the playoffs.

They needed a miracle to happen and Covid 19 was that miracle.

It's pure business EB. The Habs are 3rd most important team in the league revenue wise behind only Toronto and New York (Rangers).

Does not make sense as the team sucks but the league needs revenue right now and the Habs fan base will provide fucking much more then Columbus....

I don't think the teams that got byes have any advantage, other than having to play one less potential round. With the long layoff, I would not want to be heading into playoff action against a team that has actually played and won their first round series. So if the Habs can upset the Penguins, they could shock the idle, untested Flyers in the second round.
